I think I started this question off some time ago but others are now asking this, wanting to know the very best engine oil to use. I remember someone got a bit niffed because I was asking searching questions and he throught i was not taking any notice of him. Well it like this a judge will ask lots of questions and listen to all and then he will come to a decision. That's the same as me. Right, I have asked my question from experts and even aircraft engine fitters and reserched on the Web. So this is what I will be doing. On the cosworth I will be using Mobile One 10/40 I was not happy about the 10w I prefer 5w but in the cosworth that is the oil to use. I presume its to stop or hide the chain rattle at start up. But in the other cars, I will be useing 5/30W and mobile one if they make it.

Hi johnv & welcome back Well I've just changed over to 5/30W in the Cossy and despite the weather being warmer influencing oil temperature at start up, I would have to say though at first glance the timing chain rattle would appear to have improved. But you know how it is, between running on Optimax, 5/30W and the nice weather the car just seems to be running a whoooole lot better. Wait untill it rains and goes cold again now that's the test. LOL

thanks Odd JoB, sorry I don't know your first name. Well I would love to use 5W as well on the cosworth. My thinking is that the more runny the oil the better it will pump around the engine. There is some oil that is 0/40. so what's that all about. Anyway I did not come across one person who said 5w in a cosworth. they all where saying 10W and in the ford owners guide it states 10/ so I better play safe. But its 5w in the 2.3. But so many experts where all agreeing that Mobile One is one of the very best of all oils you can buy. So its only be asking each other questions and finding out from each other that we can all learn. But some people are saying there are other good oils as well. but my person choice is Mobile 1.

Well johnv I didn't just decide to put in one night 5W/30 I researched as to its compatabilty with my 1998 Cosworth on 78K. Two independent FMD both said 5W/30 FMC 2004 TIS states: Specification SAE 5W/30 API/SG/CD engine oil is only approved for northern European countries. If other makes of engine oil are used, make sure these are of the required API SG/CD viscosity class or better. Autodata states: Engine oil grade- cold climate............SAE: 5W/40 Engine oil grade- moderate climate............SAE: 10W/30 Engine oil grade- hot climate...........SAE: 10W/40 Engine oil classification............API/ACEA: SH/A2-96 Engine oil grade- alternate - moderate climate............SAE: 10W/40 Semi-Synth. Engine oil classification - moderate climate...........API/ACEA: SH/A3-96 Castrol http://www.castrol.com/castrol/castrolhomepage.do?categoryId=3205 Several working technicians that I know this is some of the research that I undertook before deciding to go ahead. Unfortunately this is a decision only you can make and is in no way proof or a recommendation to you but an illustration of how I decided for my vehicle. Thanks for these postings. I very surprise about FMD saying 5W. God; don't it just confuse people even more. I mean you buy a car which comes with a owners manual and it states 10W. I have not infact gone a head at the moment with changing oils, Waiting for the next service. So I reckon I will go to 5W on the cosworth, (if I still have it). I got to say that I prefer the 5W rather than the 10W. Still thanks for all these replys, its only by asking as many questions around like this that you can arrive at a decision. I still going to use Mobile 1 if they make 5W but I got it in my mind that Cromma stuff if I can't get the Mobile 1. I bet all the postings on oil has helped lots on this site who only look and not post. Its certainly helped me. Thanks to all.

Just to say thankyou to Odd Job Mike and Scorpio_man. Those posts you gave where just so good. I looked at the links you gave, real great. To think after all the posts of last time and this time. I already got Castrol Magnates in my cars. 5w/30w except the cosworth. the last owner told me its Fords. Do you remember the last time some one was saying that magnatec caused ash deposits or something like. I still reckon I going to use Mobile 1. (Its a hell of a price) but thanks again. I off now to cancell my registraction. but thanks and my best wishes to you and others on this site that give so much wonderful advice on this site.

If you use the 'Which oil for my engine' link on the Cstrol web site for the Cosworth it states: Castrol GTX Magnatec 10W-40 So where do yuo guys get 5W-30 ?

hi there if you check the ford data at the bottom, it still states SAE 5w-30 grade. it's only castrol that has changed what it recommends. hth

Not a lot really it depends on what temperature range you operate the car in.. Personally I would use 5/30 in winter and 10/40 in summer but remember these are personal pfrefernces, but I myself use 10/40 all year round.

I use 5W-40 in my 2.3 liter scorp. I thought that the small 5 will make it safer for cold temperatures and the 40 for the hot sumers

hi there copy of an email from eric..... Yep, that didn't come out right did it? Let's have another try - Multigrade oils have different flow properties at different temperatures. The W indicates that the the first number is at cold, and the LOWER the number the easier the oil will flow, ie 'thinner' Therefor, a 5W/30 oil is very thin at starting, when it needs to be pumped quickly up to pressure, and then 'thickens' at higher temperatures until it reaches the 30 viscosity. This is counter to monograde oils, which are thicker when cold and thin as they get hot. Multigrades therefore give the best of both worlds. I should have added another point - using an oil at too high a viscosity can result in higher wear at starting - bearings run longer without pressure, while stress on the oil pump and extra pressure on the cams caused by the thicker oil in the hydraulic tappets can put increased strain on the timing chains - the 24V Cosworth springs to mind here. hth

Hi DJ, don't forget the 10/30 from Mobil. (can be expensive though) I'm about to switch to 5/30 from 10/40 (been alternating as others have). Am staying with 5/30 (Magnatec) as my local FMD say its recommended by Ford and when they serviced my car last time (and it is the last time ) they used Castrol "A1" - the commercial version of Magnatec 5/30 apparently. Does this help

Hi guys and gals, I think that over the years oil viscosity has improved with testing. I remeber some of my old cars recommending 20/50 and truck engine oil was always 10/40. By the way if anyone is interested, just something I learnt by taking a risk, two stroke motorcycle oil is 10/40 and I used to use that in my brand new little X reg 50cc MB50, 13,000 thrashed miles in one year, as you do, and not a single problem with rattles or fouling of the plugs. The engine sounded just as good when I sold it as it did when I bought it. Happy motoring Steve
