Hi All, I have just aquired a 16v 2ltr with a manual gear box, it failed its mot on the cats, not a problem because it only cost me £100 and its a very tidy car next to my cossie. I,am wondering is it possible for someone who knows what their doing to change my 24v to a manual using the box and clutch stuff out of the 16v Cheers for any info Shaun I...

It is possible, I know Eric R had some experience of helping kit car drivers do this with the 24v engine.

Well this is not as easy as you think, Yes you can do it & you have most of the parts if your scrapping your 16V but the bolt pattern is different on the 16V to the 24V bell housings & you will need a better clutch as well.

lol, i suppose i just like the hassle of pushing a pedal and moving a lever also would i be right in saying that if a diesel gearbox and diff were used a 24v could top 150mph and accelerate quicker because of there being no torque converter? Matt

Matt don't change the rear diff as a Scorpio will be over geared, it will be slower & use more fuel. A diesel gearbox & diff will give you 185 mph if you ever get the power to do it but a STD engine will only do about 135 mph as it has not got enough power. A diesel or late 16V gearbox is best with the 0.75 top gear but keep the diff STD Cossie. A STD 24V engine will do about 140 mph, you have the gearing to do 170 mph but not the power? 0 - 60 will be around 8 secs. To put a manual in a 24V Scorpio is alot of work, good luck to you if you do. A Diesel box will not bolt onto a 24V by the way, you would have to change the front section of the gearbox for a V6 one. Happen to have one if you need one

Thanks Dave, a lot of useful info there. Once my current project Scorp has its engine back in and is out of the way (that is once i've found out what a single 6pin connector to the td injection pump does before i can do anything) and the weather starts to turn for the warmer, i'll be ebaying for a 24v with a broken g'box. Just wondering but what does the front section of the g'box consist of? i have a spare set of diesel clutch assemblies which came off the old diesel engine which i could use. Matt

If your serious this is the best way V6 12V flywheel (Sierra 88- 93) V6 12V Spigot bearing V6 12V manual starter motor. Escort Cosworth clutch Scorpio Diesel gearbox with VSS. Change the front of the box for a V6 MT75 one. Clutch will have to be cable operated. Fit box & cable operated clutch pedal etc. Prop from a manual Scorpio. The big problem is the electrics, you have the VSS sensor for the speedo, earth pin 64 on the ECU & make the ECU think you are in park, then you might be O.K. but there might be some other little probs to sort out. This is the bit you have to change. You have to split the box in half & swap the front bit. One special tool is needed. Click on the X.

Ahh i know the gearbox part you mean. Well, i'm an 'mechanical/electrical engineer in training' at Ford and so have the resources needed for the surgery once i've found a suitable car. How much are you looking for the front section you have, pm me let me know. Thanks, Matt

Well you should be O.K then. I think I have a 12V flywheel, starter motor & the front part of the box you can have but need to check. Will send a PM.
