Oil Sump Nuts

I'm still having trouble removing the plug to my oil sump, but I've made sure I have a replacement at the ready. In fact, I have two. And they're both different designs. The 1st one came from FordPartsUK.com and is the standard bolt with plastic washer... The 2nd one I picked up from my local FMD yesterday and is the 'new type'.... This has a seperate washer too, but kind of stays attached to the nut as it has a rubber insert. I'm guaranteed (almost) that this type won't get stuck, but we shall have to see. Anyway, here's the 2 side by side for a comparison... Paul EDIT: I've just noticed a very similar tale here... http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/sumpplug.htm Whether or not the new one I've been supplied will fit remains to be seen. One thing I will say is that the one which is well stuck on my car appears to have a metal washer to it and looks very similar to my 'new type' one. If it is one of those already fitted, I won't be using it again!

Hi Paul, The new one has a built in rubber seal and has an allen key type head rather than a hex socket head. Unfortunately the new one will not fit the sump on the 24v. Only the 16v models. EDIT sorry what I meant to say is up until now Ford had a NEW sump plug designed for the 16v models (which you do not have pictured) that will not work with the 24v. However it looks like Ford have finally gotten round to making one for the 24v which is the gold one you have pictured. Sorry for any confusion. Let us know Paul if this plug comes off any easier at your next oil change Kind Regards Danny_R

a few taps with a hammer, then use a single hex socket 13mm ( or knock on a 1/2" if its worn) then use a power bar to turn it. mind you 3 wheetabix works for me

having the same trouble with my 2.5 td, it has 2 sump plugs both female, and my trolly jack isnt working so i cant get close enough for good leverage one thing i found out a few years back when the sump plug fell out of my motorbike at 50 mph (still dunno how i didnt crash with a couple of litres of oil on the back tyre!) is that spark plugs have the same pitch as sump plugs, handy to know in an emergency.....

Well, I have a bit of an update. The troublesome sump nut has finally come off! Now, if anyone (and that includes Ford) think that the new type bolt is any easier to remove than the old one, think again. Now that I have this one to look at, I can see that this one was the new type... I have fitted the old type bolt on there for the time being. The next oil change will only be a couple of hundred miles time, so I imagine that it will come off ok. Now, this tightening thing... on the main site it states that the torque figure for the sump nut/drain plug is 24Nm or 18 Ft/lb. I imagine that this figure originates from Ford themselves. I also reckon that this could be part of the problem. Quite frankly, I stopped before the torque wrench clicked for fear of over-doing it. Its basically just done it to how it feels right. Anyway, thats another nightmare over with. What's next? Many thanks today to Russ (nuttyscorp) and Paul (paulscorp). This wouldn't have got done today if they hadn't come round and got stuck in. Cheers again guys... I owe you one.

I have 2 TDs with four sump plugs to go at and 2 are impossible to move, while the other two just spin happily without actually unscrewing! oh the joy of threading steel into aluminium

My take is that they are done up far too tight. I only nip mine up - not overdoing it. Then a blob of silicone sealant between nut & sump - after cleaning with contact cleaner! so good key. Old "enduro" racing tip - never had problem in 30 years of racing. david

Many years ago, I used to race motorcycles. Triumph Bonnevilles and Norton Dominators. Having had a sump bolt vibrate loose once during a race, I have always wired sump bolts from that day. Simply drill a small 1/8 hole through the head of the bolt across the flats. Then do up the bolt. Firmly, but NOT too tightly. Thread some strong wire through the hole and attach securely it to any convenient part of the bodywork. The nut cannot then turn loose. It works, and may solve the problem for anyone worried. 1996 Scorpio Ultima 12v 2.9. Having the scars to prove it, a metal pin in my leg, and a completely seized and wrecked engine at the time, I can qualify that you do not wanr to lose this bolt!

Blimey. Sounds like fun when it comes out And I thought there was a mess when I finally got mine undone I can report that since my last ramblings, I've done another oil change and all was well with the nut. It wasn't stuck like it was before. Felt just right. I might just get under there sometime soon and check it aint come undone though

Not me!! I'm new to Scorpios!! Might need these guys help one day! Just thought that this might save someone a great big bill. It's such an easy way to deal with the problem. Only takes about half an hour, if you conbine it with your next oil change, and you can drive easy again. Believe me, it was a painful and VERY expensive lesson.
