as header really! '95 2.0 16v I can't see anything obvious, so any suggestions appreciated. I've no marks on the road, as my first instinct was fuel return pipe. (a common fault with sierras, including a couple that I've had)

Tommy, When do you smell the petrol - when you approach the car on the outside, or inside when the car is first started? What about when the engine is running in traffic? These answers may be significant. First of all - you shouldn't ever smell petrol - there's an EVAP system that is designed to prevent HC from leaking into the air, so if you can smell it, there's deffo something wrong. Before starting, walk slowly round the car and smell for petrol, on both sides and near the petrol tank (r/o/s). If there's a smell near the filler cap it might be that there's a leak on the filler pipe leading down to the tank, or perhaps in the turnover valve. If it's from the front, lift the bonnet and sniff further. This also applies if you smell the petrol inside the car, because the aircon drain valves are probably drawing in the vapour, as Scorpio_man suggests. Check the petrol pipes going to the fuel rail pressure valve and the valve itself - if these are faulty/leaking then a tiny amount of petrol may be dribbling out when you turn on the ignition and the pump starts - but use a torch to look - not a flame Smell in the area of the inlet manifold and check the fuel rail carefully. It's very rare but sometimes an INJector can leak, especially if there's been any work on them recently. But it's most likely to be the fuel lines leading to and from the fuel pressure regulator or the reg. itself, since everything else should be closed to atmosphere. BTW - has starting been okay? Anything other than starting on the first turn may indicate a loss of fuel rail pressure overnight which also point to the FRPR. Have a careful check and get back to us.

My scorp also gives somtime a petrol smell at startup, reading what Eric wrote, it seems that i have a problem with the EVAP system. I guess this should help on the problem. http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/evapmonitor.htm

Car doesn't have aircon the smell comes after I've started the engine. (sorry to keep referring back to the sierra! ) when I had this on the sierra, it was the fuel return pipe split almost under the driver's seat, but the little puddle gave it away. on the scorpio I have no visible leaks
