I got a Scorpio 2.3 about 3 years ago with a duff autobox sliping and wouldnt select top and going into limp mode sometimes as it was put in drive etc . I never bothered with it as it was a spares car and forgot about it for a while as we were about to move house .When it was time to move and move the cars the battery was completly flat so i fitted another battery to move the car to the new place about miles away . I started it up and warmed it through then drove it to where we live now and it drove faultlessly selecting gears as and when it should . all that i had done to the car was replace the battery . Recently i got a 2.3 Scorpio saloon that again had a bad gearbox that had been bought by a member on here for spares and i bought the remains off him . When he delivered it he said the previos owner had left it stood and the battery had gone flat but when jump started the car would move in drive . I built it back up and have since done aprox 1500 miles in it ( touching wood ) without a problem . In the summer i got a 2.0 Auto and everytime it started it would allways run the cooling fans fast with the air con off or on about 5 seconds after starting ? . The battery went completly flat and when i went to replace it the clamp bolt had corroded and i had to drill it out . Anyway after replacing the battery i started it up and it run fine and the cooling fans diddnt run all the time but only come on and off now when there supposed to . Anyway in all the above problems seem to have been solved by disconecting the battery the minimum time any of the above was disconnected was overnight . I am not saying if your Scorp has a terminal problem disconecting the battery overnight will cure it but it costs nothing to try it
