Right kit for OBD scans

Hello All

Only just become a Scorpio owner - "95"  24V saloon 1 owner 53k. In very good condition so well worth looking after.

Even to a "luddite" like me it is obvious that OBD is of great importance  and indeed an essential tool for maintaining the car. Hence I have made the decision to get OBD lead ( from recommended supply in US) & PC laptop ( should be easy enough to find on e-bay).

However..... been a Mac user, I know nothing about PC's and the software. Absolutely zero.

Would welcome response from "experts" as to what to buy -

1. Hardware -- What spec PC to get / what operating system / what ports regd - so that don't have to use adapters. From what I've read on site nearly any will do. However as with all things and Mac experience the reality is that some specs are far better than others. Main thing is getting right model.
STOP PRESS - Samsung GT8000 Pentium III -700Mh 10Gb 512Ram built in serial port has been spotted. Appears OK spec to me for OBD use only.
Any comments on suitability - If OK will most likely go for it

2. Which OBD lead & software package to buy. Various articles refer to combo leads ( I may as well go all the way & have ABS option ) and software to use. BUT when I visit site it becomes confusing - there's a model ISO & and model blue route VPM PWM iTrans dual combo triple combo. Is it the latter one I want?

Any recommendations of a stable crash free set-up ( I am a Mac user used to plug & play so please be precise ) just to run ODB - nothing else. Preferably without USB adapter .

Thanks

David,
The good thing about the OBD kit we use is that it is a very compact program and it runs even in DOS. Any Windows laptop will work, preferably one with a serial port (many modern laptops don't have serial ports now)
so W98 and XP and W2000 are all fine.  The HD doesn't have to be very big either.

When you get the lead go for the PWM/ISO combi lead option - it's slightly more expensive but will read the ABS system as well as the EECV.

I'd go for this. You can contact them for advice. The software even gives you clues to the fault if your Haynes manual doesn't.

There seems to be a few probs with ebay sourced software.
