First scan - 5 codes present

Hi Chaps,

OBD lead arrived courtesy of Highlander  Smiley

First scan completed fine, connected up straight away.

5 codes present:

P1120 - throttle position sensor A out of range (ratch too low)
P0141 - oxygen sensor heater circuit (bank 1 sensor 2)
P1131 - lack of HO2S11 switches - sensor indicates lean (see P2195)
P1151 - lack of HO2S21 switches - sensor indicates lean (see P2197)
P0174 - system too lean - bank 2

Car is running absolutely fine at the moment, any help on the cause of these codes would be great!

Cheers  Smiley

hi dave

some light reading for you....http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/homediag.htm

i'd clear all the codes (you have a note of them) and then run the car for a day or two to see what turns up (if any).

i meant to add the following (just seen eric posting it Wink)

RPM
HO2S11 and HO2S12 (and HO2S21 and 22 if you have the 24V)
LTFT1. (and LTFT2 if a 24V)
MAF
and let it run for 5 to 10 minutes with an occasional blip on the throttle
but mostly on idle.

Thanks for that, Andrew  Smiley

Cleared the codes and took the car for a run, no codes as yet have shown up.

Will run the car as normal until the weekend then scan it again.

Quick question, how do you get the gauges to work on the scan program? We had the laptop plugged in while driving and it was reading properly but the gauges weren't doing anything!

Thanks again  Smiley

hi dave

you need to set each dash. only the items that you have selected in the data page (pid poss) can be used. click on dash 1. i have this as MPH. set the max and the red line, then click set. work your way through the rest the same way.

OK, ran it for a few days and scanned again. This time it just brought up one code:

P0141 - oxygen sensor heater circuit (bank 1 sensor 2)

It brought this up before, but it didn't reappear straight away, took a couple of days I think.

Any ideas?

Thanks Andrew, had a look around the forums and main site (should have looked before posting really  Roll Eyes) and will check the wiring as you suggest, and connector then look at the sensor.

I had my 24v scanned a little while ago and it too threw up the last 3 codes your car has. From what i've read its the 2 post cat oxygen sensors which are to blame. Bought 2 replacements from Highlander last week, went to fit them yesterday only to find that the wiring loom going up to the sensor connectors had worn through and were (most probably) earthing off onto the chassis, so might be worth a check.

Dave,
I notice you found a P1120 DTC. See http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/obd2scan9.htm where I experienced a TPS error, too. SLightly different DTC, I'll grant you.
I notice you also had Fuelling too lean DTCs as well.
Can I suggest you do another scan with ign on but not running, and check the reading for the TPS on the DATA page. It should show 16.1 to 16.9% at rest. If it higher or lower than that then it may be pushing the fuel trims awry. You can sort it by simply disconnecting the battery for 30 seconds.
If the TPS reading is satisfactory at rest, gently press and hold the accelerator in different positions and check that the reading increases smoothly right up to WOT, then release. If that all checks out as well then it may just have been radio interference.

Sorry only just got round to doing the tps, it is borderline 16.5% - 16.9% (keep cycling between the 2) so is ok I think.

Still showing codes for the oxygen sensors so need to have a gander underneath and check the wiring as suggested.

On the plus side I washed and waxed it at the weekend  Grin

Definately check the wiring. Last week i ended up re-wiring both of the sensors loom because it had disintergrated and was non-existant! The main problem seemed to be the brittleness of the wire, probably wouldn't have taken much for the wires to snap.

The loom for the VSS sensor also joins the oxygen sensors loom, strip back the plastic coat and you'll see. The 3 VSS wires were stripped back to the copper about an inch long and were wrapped together, how the speedo worked i don't know, but i've taped it all up and works fine. The main problem wiring up the sensors was figuring out the colours of the wire (all gunged up), and what wires went to what side oxygen sensor! Got there in the end though  Cool
