Almost at wits end!!

Hi Everyone & A Happy Christmas!

Does anybody out there know what the brake band torque is? Some of you may remember that we posted a thread sometime ago about violent gear changes. Well, since then We've changed the MAF, VSS, checked the TPS & rebuilt the entire engine loom (which was in absolute tatters when uncovered). THe gearbox oil level is OK & seems to be clean/smells OK.
The car still thumps through gearchanges & will never select top gear unless you take your foot off the accelerator completely. Sometimes when changing between 2nd & 3rd the car actually feels like the brakes are being applied!
We are wondering whether the brake band adjustment could be responsible for this?? The problem now has to be something daft?! Undecided
We should also mention that the O/D light does work & has never once flashed during driving.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this!

hi there

copied from the mailing list (for the 12 valve, but you get the idea.)

The 2.9v6 12valve does not have a MAF.  I have  a 12valve and did the
bands on the gearbox about 2 years ago.  So long as  you have good lighting the
job is quite straightforward.   As  there is not so much cluttter around the
gearbox on the 12valve it is much  easier to spot and get at the adjusters.  I
did mine with an adjustable  spanner - the adjusters are square.  I followed
the proceedure as  detailed Haynes "Granada and Scorpio 1985-1994" because I
believe that  although the Scorpio post May 1995 is a different auto to the
Granada, the  12valve post May 1995 has the same or very similar autobox as the
last  Granada Scorpios.  It certainly made a big difference to my  12valve.  I
struggled with poor lighting for a few hours but once  I lighted my way with an
extension lamp the job was completed very   quckly;
Disconnect the kickdown cable from the  autobox.
Release the locknuts on the 2 brakeband adjuster  screws.  Back off each
adjuster screw a couple of turns ( mark  one flat on each screw for
reference).  Using a torque wrench tighten  one adj screw tighten 1 screw to 13Nm (10
lbf ft).  Remove the  torque wrench and back off the screw exactly 2 full turns
from this position,  then holding the screw in place tighten the locknut.
Repeat this  proceedure on the other screw.
Re connect the kickdown cable to the autobox.

I did not use a torque wrench as I could not get it to the screws  so I
guessed the correct tightness.  Successfully as it happens

Many thanks for your reply.
This looks similar to the instructions for the Sierra 'box in the Haynes manual (although they only specify adjustment for the front band).
We will venture under once more when it stops raining!

P.S. Do you think this is likely to solve the problem? Smiley

hi there

have you ever had a scan done for fault codes? something might show up even if the o/d doesn't flash.

what about new filter and fluid? i'm thinking along the lines of a pressure problem. not sure, though. Undecided

try the band adjustment and see if that helps.
