Steering wheel & airbags don't have to be removed (although the passenger airbag has to be unplugged). I didn't remove them when I replaced my heater matrix.....only had to pull the dash out about 5 inches  Smiley

One thing I did have to do though was to undo the brake pedal bolt & swing the brake pedal sideways so I could manoeuvre the matrix out, because the pedal was in the way  Roll Eyes

Some pics of the fun I had  Roll Eyes....but don't think it was warm just because the sun is shining....it was February & it was bitterly cold  Sad

Everything removed & dash pulled forward....

Brake pedal swung sideways....

Heater box with matrix removed........note the centre aperture is smaller than the entry aperture. That's why the cheapo pattern part Granada/Sierra matrix (which has a big bulbous plastic end) doesn't fit  Roll Eyes

Yes John, see what you mean.   The garage guy said that they will use the proper part. Apparently the older cars used copper (as with rads) but nowadays most replacements are plastic.   I`m not bothered as long as I get some heat into the footwell. I have to drive to Penzance and back before xmas, so I`ll need it.
I have used a garage in Leigh for the last five years, and they have always given good service and reliability, which is rare these days.   The car is going in at 8.30 this morning.  Fingers Crossed.   cheers fred Sad

If you can get it the old one back I’d be interested to see it at a Kent meet.

Good luck

Yes, they usually give the old parts back, it saves their bin overflowing.  I  might  even frame it and hang it in the garage as a reminder!
By the way, I came across a geneva movement which was a test piece when I was training to be an instrument maker.  You would know all about them.
See you at the next meet.  cheers fred.

I hear and see what Johnny is saying about not completely removing airbag and steering wheel, but as I said I took the whole heater right out of the car and gave it a thorough overhaul, cos I didnt wanna do this much work and then have further problems say sticking flap motors etc in the future.  Also I didn't want to be straining wiring etc with it all just hanging there, and by removing the whole dash from the car you don't have to take the pedal box apart or be a contortionist lol.....Swings and roundabouts really Wink

And yes I cut the old one up and I too could see exactly why flushing etc doesn't work  Grin

I think the matrix would be too cold for the fridge---- but the freezer might be ok! Grin

Mine’s been working fine since I last blasted it through with steam (I don’t expect it to last). The least successful was back flushing with mains water – plenty of water going through but not much debris came out.
I’ve used descaler etc as others have but it doesn’t usually last for long.
I did get about a dozen little bits of twisted plastic out about 3mm x 5mm these were covered in a sort of resin (possibly a rad sealer), they looked like swarf (top of picture).

Anyone know the internal diameter of the pipes? The last time I steamed it & blew it through while hot I got a couple of twists of plastic (bottom of picture) 3.5mm dia x 30mm long (twist the wrong way to come from a drill), I’m wondering if the pipes are lined with these and they’re breaking up.

Hi,  All will be revealed hopefully by tomorrow p.m, when I hope to collect the beast from the garage. I will certainly be interested to see the condition of the original unit after 12+ years of use. Cheers fred

My old heater matrix was in a sorry state when I removed it. Not only was it severely restricted, it was leaking slightly & had alot of green gunge around the leak area  Huh......possibly the result of a leak stopper ?  Undecided

Also the in & out plastic pipes had become so brittle & broken that there wasn't much left of them where the rubber pipes fit over the ends.....that explains the little bits of plastic that kept coming out when I repeatedly flushed the system  Roll Eyes

When I tried to blow through what was left of the in/out pipes, all I got was a load of gurgling from inside the matrix & had to blow real hard to get the air to come out the outlet  Roll Eyes

Blowing through a new matrix is just like blowing through a short pipe.....no resistance  Wink

Hopefully you'll have a hot Scorp by Friday night  Wink

I have read jonnycab’s last post about the condition of the matrix.  I used a radiator flush a year ago with reasonable success but I no longer have hot air and there is a faint smell from the air vents.

I was intending to flush just the matrix with an external pump but from jonny’s post a new matrix seems to be the answer.

Malcolm, that was the condition of my matrix, yours may not be as bad  Undecided . It always worth trying to flush it again before going to the last resort & fitting a new matrix  Wink..... Smiley

Hi Jon,  Delays have arisen because the correct unit wasn`t supplied to the garage on three occasions.  I heard from the garage on saturday morning that the correct unit is on "back order" from essex ford, so may be Tuesday or Weds next week.   Bit of a disappointment, but contrary to some posts it has to be the correct unit, as others just wont fit without being adapted. My scorp is totally standard so I dont want any pattern cheapo imitation parts fitted.   Will keep you posted on future developments  cheers fred

Hi Freddieboy
As said before got mine from Fordpart.uk
in january of this year,at a cost of £111.01
  including delivery,   part No 1041093,

and as ive said after trying for 11 months
without the matrix in the car(obvious b/c i put
a new one in)i still am not able to clear more than 2
pipes,to do a succesfull flush, you need the inlet pipe
to be a continuouse pipe feed to the outlet pipe, and
the scorpio matrix does not do that, off the main inlet
plastic pipe there are 7 small alluminimum pipes, which
u bend back,to give 7 small outlets into the plastic outlet pipe,so when water is forced along the plastic
inlet and hits the end, water will be forced down the 2 top inlets, and once forced a way through those its not
going to force a way through the other pipes, thats why
members report a slight increas in warmth ,im not saying
flushing will 100% not work, just letting people know why if they do it,and it hasnt worked, they have a reason
ren
Welcome any comments from those who have changed
the mattrix, and on observation of it,just in case there
were other designs than mine, i still have my old one so
i know how that is designed and that my information is based on that.

Hi   posting that info as told me how i can try to clear
the other pipes,if i can find something which will  reasonabley
fit the inlet pipe,so  it stops the force of water at differing
stages along the pipe,
rubber plugs with a hole drilled in centre to attach wire thro so i can repull them out, could work.
