2-3 shift flare (2.3 1997)

Hi,

I have a problem with my tranny that occurs only when it's shifting from the 2nd to the 3rd gear, RPM's rise suddenly  for a 200-400 for a second or so, and then 3rd gear engages and they drop to the normal level, all other gear changes are normal. ATF oil and filter have been changed recently, with 110k km on the clock, I don't know if the previous owner ever changed it..
So, I'm interested if anyone have experienced these kind of problems, and knows potential remedy for that issue
Tnx

I have exactly same problem...took to auto specialist rebuilt box still did same thing ...said maybe it was a solenoid sticking
..if you find an answer let me know
I couldnt face the car going back for another week..its been like it for 2 years..i just take foot off pedal when it shifts...also it works fine if revs are high ...if you get anywhere let me know and vice versa

Try slackening the 2nd gear brake band adjustment half a turn, thats the adjuster at the middle of the gearbox, not the front one cos that is the overdrive band.

It accumulates its 2 - 3 shift from this servo so if the band is a bit tight it will flare.  A lot of autobox "specialists" set these too tight.

HTH,

I did some google research, and found out few forum threads about this same problem on other Ford cars with the same autobox A4LDE (4R44E in US), and it seems that they got rid of it succesifully with installing a Shift kit on a valve body.
It can be bought on Ebay for less than 100 USD
Anyone did that on Scorpio?

I wouldn't recommend anyone trying that lol, unless you are an autobox rebuilder like me, and very familiar with these transmissions!!

Quickest way to destroy your gearbox if you get it just slightly wrong.

Yep the parts are cheap, but years of experience fitting them is needed, and I've seen loads of transmission companys muck up fitting shift kits!!

Had gearbox looked at ..they said was solenoids ..changed 2-3 solenoids new oil and filter...now x3 times worse than when it went in..guess new oil thinner or something....now i guess will have to take it somewhere else and be sure to do a deal no fix no money......ps they also checked bands and were set ok...painful all of this !

@Dave,
 tnx for an advice, I surely won't try to fix an autobox by myself, i'm not that skilfull, but here in Croatia there are not a lot of cars with auto transmission, so therefore not many autobox rebuilders too, especially good ones...Could you also tell me if this flare issue is going to do much harm to may tranny if I decide to leave it this way?

@Mike,
in that case/topic RPM's drop, and that's quite normal when shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear, unlike my case where they rise for a while (especially under heavy acceleration) until 3rd gear engages
