1995 diesel - cannot get to start
« on: Aug 11th, 2010, 2:03pm »

hi, really need some help on this one.
i cannot get my 2.5 diesel to start up. problems first started when one of the push rods came out of place, which was due to it snapping the metal plate that runs over the top. this has now been fixed but now the car refuses to start.
the car turns over but just will not fire. the battery went flat on the car, with being stood for a couple of months but have charged it up and still have no joy with it. also, i have no dashboard lights and the red led on top of the dash does nothing, i have checked the fuses, all of which seem to be intact. have taken the shroud off the steering wheel and cannot find the pats transponder receiver, so does this mean the car has no immobiliser? also, the only key that i have been given for the car has no chip inside it but before the incident with the pushrod it started everytime, with no problem.
many thanks in advance

Hello and welcome Smiley

Has you're battery been disconnected?

if so, have all the wires been reconnected on the -ve terminal?

Its easy to miss the small one.

Make sure theres not one still tucked under the battery.

Just to clarify, you have no ignition or dash lights at all but the engine cranks over?

Possibly ignition relay, if you have the heated windscreen try swapping relays 18 and 21 in the battery side fusebox, they are identical.

I'd also remove your light switch and check the back of it, they can overheat and short out.

Could be a wiring or fusebox problem, check the fuseboxes for water, especially the passenger side one, the lid unclips and the bottom unclips in a similar fashion, it may have water in the bottom of it.

do your indicators work?

Defintely sounds like the passenger side fusebox, did you remove the bottom of the casing below the fuses and check in there for water?

Multimeter time I think, start at the passenger side fusebox making sure the large fuses I, II, III, IV all have power and are ok (if fitted)

then I'd test the terminals at Relay 21 for the ignition.

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/battery_fusebox.gif

Make sure the multiplug on the drivers side fusebox is seated correctly too but I dont think that is the main issue.

Does anything which requires the ignition on in either position I or II work?

hi highlander, have just taken all the fuses out and tested for conti they all fine, then tested for voltage, 12volts was on all the back pins but fuse II looked a bit dingy so wiped them, put the fuses on. when we put fuse II could hear a relay start. put key in ignition, all dash working and car started. really appreciate the help that you have given. wouldnt have had a clue where to start apart from gallon of petrol and box of matches, lol.

What lights are staying on? still cranking ok just not firing?

Might be the multiplug terminals under the fusebox? might be worth taking them off and having a look?
