Heater Blower Motor Bodge

My blower motor started to get a bit noisy so I took it out using the method on the site:

Some people have said it’s easy, but mine was a bit of swine to get out, making the cuts was easy enough but the top just wouldn’t come out. I had to take the wipers out in the end – which I’d recommend anyway as it doesn’t take long, (my wipers are much quieter now having oiled all the pivots, cleaned the dirt off the rubber mountings & improved one of the ball joints).
Even with the wipers out it was still a struggle.
Having got the motor out I found the commutator was worn through in places.
I decided to try & use the unworn part, it’s only about 60% of the width of the brushes, but I reckoned with the wide knife edge style of pivot used they should be stable enough.
Moving the brushes over nicely wasn’t going to be easy, so I opted for the quick & dirty method & just twisted them over. 
The brushes pivot on the edge of the case – so you need to check there’s still endplay in the motor and it spins freely when you’ve finished (I found it tightened up after working on 1 brush, but freed off when I did the other).
Key to picture:
Yellow arrow - commutator worn through to insulation.
White arrow – unworn area.
Blue arrows – where the brush spring attaches.
Red line - twist the adjacent part of the case (this is the pivot-edge) with pliers.
Green arrow – the other spring in place. Hook a bit of wire/fishing line through the spring to pull it into place (try not to let it go as the magnet can attract it inside of the motor).
This is how it ends up, I probably should have trimmed off the brush overhang & rebedded them, but I gave the bearings a squirt of spray grease & bolted it in the car & it worked OK so I didn’t bother.
It’s been like it for over 2000 miles and been fine.

Well done Dave. Just one point, "so I opted for the quick & dirty method & just twisted them over". Don't we have enough trouble with GOST as it is without giving him ideas !!?.

My blower fan stopped working a few months ago on my Scorpio ('95 Ultima 16v). There is power going to the fan motor from the HBC, so I guess the next step is to get the fan motor out.
I've read through the fan repair page but I didn't really like the idea of sawing through the plastic housing. Is there a way to get the whole box out without dismantling the entire car around it?

I’m not sure how easily it comes out, but assuming you have aircon it looks as though that will have to be drained & disconnected first.
Have you tried oiling the bearings, some people have got them going by spraying WD40 into the housing – not the best of ways as it’s difficult getting it onto the bearings.
Having looked inside the housing I’ve had a thought about a slightly more accurate method of oiling the bearings – I’ll try & experiment with it at some time.

You could drill two holes above where the shaft exits the bearings,and plug em with two small grommets.Drill 12cm from each outer end of the fan housing in the centre,this is directly above where you need to be.

You may be right, I thought it may be difficult to get to the right spot as you have to get through the blades of the fan.
I was thinking along the lines of using a thin plastic tube taped to a wire and using light spray grease.
Along these lines:
Looks possible one end, but may be tricky at the commutator end – getting over the brush & under the fan shroud in the case.

I know its a long shot but its cheap a couple of kent meets ago Simmo took the hbc out and poked around inside the apperture, felt a type of spring thingy fiddled and spun fan, hey presto i had a hbc working again
