Specifications - Scorpio Radios from 9/95

Should you think about a Ford upgrade, here are the specifications for the Model 3000 to 7000 radios, announced in 1995.  The 6000 single CD player/radio was not announced until later.

The principle objectives of the new Ford audio programme were to:

bulletImprove ergonomics
bulletImprove sound quality
bulletEnhance audio security
bulletImprove integration of appearance with instrument panel
bulletReduce parts count and complexity

Ergonomics

Market research has shown that sound quality and ease of use are the most important factors affecting customer satisfaction with vehicle audio equipment.

The size of buttons, spacing between buttons, logical grouping of buttons, display readout and reduced multi-functions of the buttons are the most important elements that determine "ease of use".

The new design addresses all these factors and according to market research has proved to be ahead of the best in class DIN size products for ease of use.

Remote controls improve ergonomics still further and two of the units, the 5000 and 7000 are available with remote control on the Scorpio '96 MY. [Actually remotes were standard from Jan1995.]

Security

All of the new audio range have the following security features:

bulletUnique to Ford 100 mm bezel size
bulletRemovable security front panel
bulletFlashing LED (when security front panel removed)
bulletFluorescent strip revealed when security front panel removed
bulletImproved Keycode system
bulletVehicle alarm sense connector
bulletSerial number laser etched into the unit for permanent identification

In addition the 5000 and 7000 series models have the vehicle registration number feature (as current 2006 and 2007 series models).

Keycode entry procedure

Preset buttons one to four are used to enter the four digit keycode in a similar way to the current 2000 series units.

Preset button five is used to enter the complete keycode and enable the unit to operate.

After three incorrect keycodes are entered, the unit will lockup for 30 minutes, the display will then enter the 'WAIT' mode and count-down to zero. When 'CODE' is displayed, the radio will accept another entry attempt.

After 10 incorrect keycode entries are made the unit will be permanently locked out.

Removable security front panel

With the security front panel removed the radio will not function. Two versions of the panel are available, one for the 3000, 4000 and 5000 series units and the other for the 7000 series unit.

The security front panels are not coded to individual radios and are available in black only (security panels are not colour coded to the radio fascia colour).

Replacement security front panels

To maintain the effectiveness of the security front panel, it is essential that proof of ownership is determined before a replacement panel is supplied to a customer.

The customer should be asked to provide the following information:

bulletName and address
bulletThe vehicle identification number
bulletProof of identification (e.g. Driver's Licence, Passport)
bulletA vehicle invoice (if the unit was installed in the vehicle prior to delivery) or a parts invoice if the unit was purchased separately or an appropriate Vehicle Registration document.

Integration

The new audio range has been specifically designed to provide an integrated appearance within the vehicle instrument panel.

Complexity

The new audio range replaces 10 2000 series radio cassettes and one remote amplifier with four units.

All four new units have the same connections and are inter-changeable for easy upgrade.

The requirement for high power (4 x 20 Watt) remote amplifiers with different wiring looms on high specification products is eliminated. All amplification is contained within the new units.

The 2040 CD player and the 2050 CD Autochanger (10 disc) have been replaced by the 2060 and 2062 CD Autochangers (six disc). The 2040 and 2050 remain available on Mondeo until '97MY.

NOTE: The 2060 CD Autochanger has already been introduced on the Scorpio '95¼ MY.

The number of audio units required for each vehicle range is substantially reduced.

Aftermarket Programme

The integrated design of the new audio units will be more desirable to customers requesting fitment of aftermarket audio units.

Simplified wiring means that upgrading from a low series to a high series unit plus the addition of a CD Autochanger is much easier than with the current 2000 series units.

Upgrade kits will be made available and will contain all the hardware required for upgrade.

General Information

All of the new audio range utilise a carry over fixing which means that the current audio removal tools can be used.

The new units are of increased overall size and weigh between 1,7 and 2,3 kg, so care must be taken during handling and storage. These changes may also have an impact on dealer radio storage facilities.

3000 series

There is no balance control - left and right audio output levels are fixed.

3000/4000 series

The cassette deck is an Autostop type - after completion of one side, the cassette will have to be ejected and re-inserted to play the other side.

3000/4000 Traffic series

Please note, these units are not RDS-EON units and therefore cannot switch from the tuned station to another radio station for a traffic announcement.

5000/7000 series

The 2060/2062 six disc CD Autochangers can be controlled directly from the radio front panel. A single cable is required to connect the radio and CD Autochanger the cable includes a fuse in an inline fuse holder, clipped to the radio rear support bracket. The fuse is designed to protect the radio in the advent of a fault in the cable or autochanger.

Programme Type (PTY)

Both the 5000 and 7000 series units have the ability to display the programme type of the tuned station (e.g. Sport, Drama or Pop Music), and they can also be programmed to seek for a particular programme type.

As part of the PTY function the radios can also be programmed to interrupt the cassette or CD with news bulletins in a similar way to traffic announcements.

PTY is only available from certain radio stations.

Automatic Volume Control (AVC)

Volume is automatically increased/decreased to compensate for changing ambient noise levels. The radio uses the signal from the vehicle speed sensor to determine the volume setting.

AVC only functions on Scorpio. Fiesta '96 MY and Escort '96 MY do not have the connection between the speed sensor and radio.

All units

All the new units feature a one hour mode which means the units can operate for up to one hour with the ignition switched off. The radio automatically switches off after this time.

The cassette head is withdrawn from the tape when the cassette is not in use to prevent the tape sticking to the cassette head and pinch roller and damaging the tape.

RDS and RDS-EON Functions

Audio units equipped with RDS or RDS-EON decoders pick up inaudible signals transmitted on the FM waveband. When tuned to stations transmitting such signals, additional audio unit functions may be provided. The table below provides details about which functions are available from different audio units.

NOTE: Certain RDS and RDS-EON functions may not be available from all radio stations.
