Auto box & 4th gear/OD

Hi I live in Dublin, Ireland and will be a purchasing a 2.3L 1998 facelift Ultima saloon in state blue in a couple of weeks. I have to say that it's an impressive car to drive. In fact, it's impressive just to sit in. I also have to say that this is a stunning site and I feel I will be referring to this site a lot Anyway, the query I have is what exactly is the overdrive on the auto box? Is it simply a 4th gear? If so, why isn't the gear selector marked as 1, 2, 3 and D instead of 1, 2 and D with an O/D button on the actual selector? If indeed, O/D is a 4th gear and switching off O/D switches down a gear, then a "3" option on the gear selector would do the job. Is it just a convenience switch so that you don't have to move the gear selector Although off-topic, I won't be able to drive the car until June 1st when I turn 25 as my insurance company won't insure me until then. And nobody else will insure me either Also, as it's a 2.3 and Ireland must have one of the most backward taxation systems (rates are charged depending on engine cc), I will be paying a whopping €755 a year on car tax
