MAF sensor cleaning

My idea of servicing my P reg 2.3 16v scorpio involves tyre pressures, fluid topping up and puting petrol in it. (It does get seviced, just not by me). I have been getting about 20 / 21 MPG and have read that cleaning the MAF filter helps.

1/ What is and where is the Maff filter?
2/ How do I go about cleaning it?

Cheers

Thanks for the reply..........followed the link, read, understood and now got myself a project for the weekend. The bit in the article about helping gear changes is interesting. As this scorp is my first I didn't know if the less than smooth gear changes were just the ford auto box ( my previous 4 cars being Volvo's and the gear changes on them was great) so will be interesting to see if the MAF cleaning has any effect. Hers hoping as after all the scorp has done 90,000 miles and I would imagine it has never been looked at. I'll get back with rsults.

Cheers

I find the auto gear change smoother than a lot of other cars I have driven (I admit it's no merc though), as long as I'm in economy (in the loosest sense of the word) mode.

Only the cattle grid feeling going into 4th spoils it. I cleaned my MAF a while back. I get between 28-30mpg on the motorway at a constant 80 (er, I mean 70) mph, which isn't that bad I don't think considering the size of the engine and the weight of the car.
