hey there.
i,am a 95, scorpio estate owner from holland and i bought a set of the 16 inch 12 spoke ultima wheels, but the holes in those are bigger
than in the standard wheel
do i need to fit special nuts for these wheels?

yes, the ones for the alloys have a bigger 'collar'. that's why there is a speed restriction when using the steel spare wheel.

I have always thought that the spare on a car with alloys, being a normal steel wheel was a bit of a con.Of all the cars I have had with alloys (many) only my Carlton had an alloy as a spare, all the Fords had a steel wheel... would it make that much difference to put a wheel as a spare that matched the rest?

No difference apart from the fact the 16 inch with 225/50/16's on wont fit in the wheel well, hence the steel.
You could always get a set of steel nuts from ford for a fiver and leave them in the boot, just in case, mind you i have always done this and never needed them.
Every new ford car with alloys will have a spare, my puma didnt come with steel wheels but the spare was steel.
The last ford I had with an alloy spare was my trusty MK2 2.8is estate

The wheel nuts for the alloys are ok to use without having any problems, the collar doesn't sit on the steel seat of a steel wheel as this seat is smaller. There is normally only a speed restriction when using a space saver wheel, but not the ones we have in our cars.

They are Ford Ghia and have a 60 degree seat as far as i remember.
