IMHO it is only a matter of time before ALL these photochromatic mirrors start to fail like any LCD screen they do have a terminal life span. I do not think replacing with a second hand one is a very good idea as tsome of the members will confirm that even after putting in a 'new' one its failed again.. but the Ford one cost is really quite prohibitive....

Thats it!... IT does NOT dip but darkens as the light hits it from the rear.... Have a read of the http://www.bigesmalls.freeserve.co.uk/photo_chromatic_repair.htm  it will hopefully explain it all... But in short there is a fluid between two plates of glass.....inside the mirror.

Hi,

Spotted same feature in new Volvo S60.
Mirror looks exactly same, but the AUTO button is missing.
Hopefully it gets more popular, so the price will go down.. maybe.

Just a thought but do any of the other Ford group models use the same mirror, new Mondeo maybe? Surely Ford did not develop this design just for the Scorpio, maybe one of the US Ford or Lincoln models uses one? After all, some of them do use the same exterior door handles, etc.

The mirror in my beloveds ugly as sin new Megane looks identical to my Scorpio one but in a light beige colour and without the power button. Apparently, the higher spec cars have the button as well.

It appears that Jaguar models use an ELECTROCHROMATIC MIRROR so must be at least compatible if not the same on. Can't find any pics as yet though.

Simon,

The same mirror is used in the US - drove Ford and Mercury SUV's out there last year and the mirrors were identical to the Scorpio. Bet they'd be less in US$ than we pay in GBP  Undecided

When I explained to the guys I went out there with what they did the response was typically "cor, these yank cars have everything don't they" - they couldn't believe that it had been fitted to the Scorpio nearly 9 years earlier  Grin

Cheers,
Dave

ps. Don't remember the names of the models involved (isn't there an explorer or something?) but they had loads of "Scorpio" features - same O/D off button and identical O/D light for instance. Had to explain that too...  Wink

Ok,

Did a bit of searching - have a look at http://www.mitocorp.com/nvsmirro.htm. They do a whole range of mirrors - some with compass, temp sensor etc. They also have fitting kit for "overseas" fords built before 1998...

The link to the specs/fitting instructions shows what the electrical requirements are:

BlackGround Wire
Red+12V supply switched by ignition
White+12V reversing signal (back-up lights)
Yellow+12V constant power (battery)
BrownConnected to +12V dome light circuit

Now, where are those wiring diagrams...

Dave

BTW, the basic model seems to cost around $100

Brilliant! Has anybody checked if the wiring is compatible with our mirrors though? I could look at a wiring diagram but I'd be left wondering if egg fried rice was included or not  Grin

My mirror now has a definite "line" near the top where it looks a lighter colour. Don't see the point of buying another old one and don't particularly want to wait for the "Alien Blood" all over my centre console!

BTW, I looked at the Ford US site, drew a big blank with "photochromatic" but  stumbled across "photochromic" (life would be much easier if Americans could spell  Shocked). Then found that "Gentex" are a huge mirror maker (and they look like the Ford ones) and then the link to the site I posted...

Dave

Hmmmm, compass AND temperature sensor  Wink

Also found links to "photochromic", heated side mirrors with built in "flashing chevrons" to tell the muppet along side that you're indicating... This could work out more expensive than buying a basic one from an FMD  Wink

Still haven't found a HUD for the windscreen though... yet!

Here is the reply and the link that they have sent to me/us
Quote:
I apologize for the delay on the Gentex mirror pricing you requested.  I had emailed the information to you last week, but now that I look back at that email, I had your email address wrong!   So, again, I apologize for my error!

I would definitely love to help you out with the unfortunate situation that is occurring on the Ford Scorpios!  From your original email, you had a link to our Gentex Auto-Dimming rear view mirror.  This is part# 50-GENK2.  The cost for your Ford Scorpio club will be $79.00 US Dollars.  If you purchase 50 or more, your cost will be $64.00!  With shipping costs and the wire transfer process, this price would really help out.  You will also need part# 50-7302023 which is the mount you will need to adhere to the windshield in order to mount the mirror.  This mount is $3.95.

I would like to make sure that you know there will be a slight installation process on these mirrors.  Many of our day to day retail customers do not realize this and end up returning the mirror because they cannot install it.  The last thing I want is to ship these mirrors out to England and find that the install cannot be done.  I don’t want anyone to be out shipping costs etc.  The wiring is pretty much universal, but in case you have not already done so, I would like for you to take a look at the installation instructions to make sure this is will work smoothly for all of you!  Here’s the link….

http://www.mitocorp.com/mirror_installation.htm

I have put a tracking feature on this email so that I am notified of the delivery to your Inbox!  Please let me know if you have any questions at all!  I hope to hear from you soon!

This looks interesting, but the key issues seem to be:
1) how easy is it to remove the old base unit glued to the windscreen, and
2) compatability of the wiring harness.

The unit as described on the Mitocorp web site also shows a temperature sensor probe but I guess this could be omitted if preferred.

It seems to me that before Snoopy considers a bulk purchase order we need a brave member to buy one and fit it, in order to find out if there are any snags to what seems like one heck of a bargain.

Any takers?

My mirror is OK, at present  Grin, but no doubt it will fail eventually so I would buy one for the spares box  Smiley.

After a look at the wiring diagrams, the standard mirror has three wires, a swiched live, a reverse activated live and a ground(-). (Dave, I couldn't find the crispy duck)

The base model of the mirror in question has the same three connections. The other wiring on the mirror described in this thread are for map lights fitted in the mirror. So if you can get the old mirror off without breaking the screen, it should be an easy replacement!!

Well this sounds perfectly reasonable to me.  Does $79 include shipping ??  Don't forget that i have a mate in the USA who will take delivery and post on at cost as 'returned warranty items' therefor avoiding customs malarky.  This will save 35-40% !!!
