facelift upgrade

hello, and happy new year to you all  Grin

i have a 96 ultima 2.3, which i use as a taxi, and a perfect taxi it is too!

anyway, my query starts like this... some idiot reversed into me in a supermarket car park, as i was parked in a taxi rank, loading up with shopping.... his insurance will pay up, (hopefully), but as i am insured third party i have to get the car repaired myself, and claim the costs from his insurers...
it needed a new hedlight, fog light, bumper, indicator, and a slight wing repair.

i sent off the quotes to the insurers, and they said, get on with it...

to bgin with, the car DIDNT need a whole headlight, just a lens, so i treated myself to two new facelift lenses  Wink

i have had a temporary repair done to the bumper, to keep me working throughout the festive period, but i need a new bumper.

i also fitted a new foglight, which appears to be different from the one already there, as it looks clear, and the other one is tinted?

hat i want to know is... if i fit a facelift bumper, will the indicators and foglights fit it? and should it be clear or tinted foglights?

I already have a facelift grill, which was fitted from before i bought the car.

And one more query... if i get the front of the car updated, will a later bootlit update the rear, or will i need lights to go with it? or is it a different body shape?

sorry for the long post, but i think i have it all off my chest now!

Oh yes, and is the rear bumper different too?

thanks for all your help

Hello mate.

The fogs & flashers will fit in the later bumper. Not quite sure what the score is with the fog lights though. I had one crack, so bought a replacement, only to find the new ones are clear, and then had to get another  Angry

Anyway, the rear stuff will all fit too, but you will need the lights as well as the bootlid piece.
The rear bumper itself is the same though, as far as I know.

Have a look at this page... Facelift Differences

thnks for your help, as you can see, im trying to make my car look newer!

do you know which foglights are meant to be in the later cars? is it the tinted ones, or the clear ones?

as far as the rear of the car goes, will i need a bootlid? or just the rear lights?

while the car is off the road, i might as well go the whole way and do a right job!

Well mine's a '97 pre-faceift, but had the darker fogs in it (now clearer ones as thats all that was available). I think they may have just discontinued the dark ones (?)

You shouldn't need the bootlid, just the set of lights, etc.

Anyway, seriously, best of luck with the conversion.
How did the swap of the lenses go by the way? Did you do any pictures?

i may be wrong here but if someone bumps your car they pay and not you. fully comp  repairs your car for you should you be at fault.as you were not then your ins company should fight it for you and you must not pay anything ur self. this isi why we pay insurance. BTW if it was a suprmarket carpark then its classed as private property and  the other persons ins comp may not cough up . check it out first....

I am a little mystified by the tinted foglights. I have never noticed any difference on any in the scrappies that I frequent. Pictures anyone?

hi baz...

tinted foglights... i didnt know there was any difference either, but clearly there is.

only when the new one was fitted did i notice

the old one, and maybe its not the original one,  has clear glass, but the inner reflector looks dark, like facelift headlights.
but the new one from ford, has clear glass, and also has a nice shiny reflector....and looks white in comparison??

didnt notice this on any other car before, but will look out for pics now

nick, you are absolutely right about insurance, but let me explain my situation...

i was hit while stationary, i was loading the car with shopping in a taxi rank, outside safeways...
the guy who hit me left me with a name and address and i have 2 independent witnesses, i also have reg no of the car etc...

i called my insurance co, to let them know

i also have legal, uninsured loss protection cover

i called up that company, who were very helpful, and they asked me to provide them with 2 quotes

i did that, one for 1091.50, and another for 1072.72

with that, they said my car may be a write off, because its only got a book value of 1600

i was not happy with this, as its nearly xmas, and i would lose more than that by not working...

furthermore, they said my car would not be looked at till the new year

i asked what the options were, and they said, i could get the car repaired, and pay for it, and hope that the other insurance co will pay up

so thats wot i have done...

and i used the garage with the lowest quote, and that just happens to be my local friendly garage, who will work under my instruction  Wink

so as they priced for a complete headlight assembly... i reminded them that lenses were available... so that wot i got

and i will now get a facelift bumper to go with my new lenses

the garage are also prepared to wait a while for payment from the insurance co, which means that i SHOULDNT have to pay for it myself
