Polarity of speaker wires

I've been through all the wiring diagrams , and I've looked at the speakers , but there's nowhere to say which wire is the nominal '+' and '-' .... Since I'm wiring in a sub-woofer , it all has to be in phase. The replacement speakers for the rear supplied ones (estate) have the terminals labelled + and - , but the Ford supplied speakers have none. Anyone help ? thanks a lot Charlie

Hi Charlie .. as you say the Ford speaker wiring have all different colours so they are hard to trace without the diagram .. the old way was that ALL speakers have the striped to + or plus ..but even broken stripes can be hard to see and especially with the Ford ones .. it won't damage your speakers or sub to be out of phase though ..it will only sound crap while you test ..out of phase is the speaker cone coming out when it should be pulling in .. you can experiment and will notice the difference when you are the right way round ... in the meantime I will try and find you the correct wire colours ..... regards ....STN

As Snoops says the black one is earth. IE all that have a stripe are positive..... One thing tho... what are you using to feed the sub? You will need a dedicated amp and where are u taking the signal from. I assume you have an aftermarket head unit ?. If you want i have sum OFC sub cable kicking around sumwhere....... let me know and its urs Cheers Nick

Halford sell a cable for connecting a Ford radio, on the back of the pack it tells you what pin is what - so you could always have a look at one to make sure! The cable going from 7000 radio end are:- Pin 1 Left Front + Pin 2 Left Front - Pin 3 Left Rear + Pin 4 Left Rear - Pin 5 Right Front + Pin 6 Right Front - Pin 7 Right Rear + Pin 8 Right Rear - Not sure if it would be the same for all in the range! Snoopy is right about the black being earth but on the radio, as you can see from the above, has 4 and are not always just black! Hope this helps! Daven

the other thing of course if you're wiring a sub in of a single amp is to use a crossover to ensure your frequencies are filtered correctly. stay with me here.. the crossover will have phono out to your amp which in turn has clearly marked +ive and -ve speaker terminals so wiring your sub in will be easy. Then if you decide to run your component speakers thru an amp,buy a crossover that has high out and low out and take the high out phono's to your component amp which again has clearly marked speaker terminals. go steady with all those wires tho...

better than white fluff elsewhere! lol. The sound was actually pretty good, only annoyance was the fuel tank that mercedes had inconsiderately stuck between the rear seat and the boot, thus reducing sound in the cabin. Once i removed the top layer of four batteries(there were 8 in total)there was room for shopping. I remmoved them as i bent the rear trailing arms whilst 4-wheel hoppin. Seems that they were the weak point. Car was sold last year and my mate from bristol owns it now.

Hey Tom, Don't mean to be rude, but have you ever heard of P clips ? , they would sort out that mess of wiring no end. I take it that installs are not quite as important as your air bags ,lol.

that was kind of a test run to make sure it all fitted and worked. It was tidied with staples in the end as i had trouble getting the p-clips to nail in. Then it was all pulled out and sold off in bits as the next project turned up

The stuff in the boot ain't really Hi-Fi it's just POWER i.e. LOUDNESS. Now I like loud rock music, and I am quite happy with the factory fitted Ford 7000 , it's quite loud enough for me!

Eddie, You really need to be a bass head to be able to understand, . You really need to feel that thump. And Mr floppy the Ford 7000 head unit is crap compared with a decent one. Btw Tom, You can get the p clips from Maplin on City road in Cardiff.

yes the thump and the rumble One of my big things tho is to make sure that i keep as much sound as possible inside where i want it. Invested time and money into that boot to make sure that there was minimal disruption outside and maximum sound inside. Was actually a very nice matched sound when it was all done and it didn't matter whether i was listening to hip hop or acoustic folk,it still managed to handle it all. Oh and i love my hi-fi too..hence the pair of morduant short signifers that are gracing my room hooked up to my dual turntable. The scorp is running one 12" sub(600w rms) only matched to a 1000w amp,and by the time i'm finished it'll also be running a 6x100w amp matched to 2 x 8" subs,2 x 5" mids and 2 x 6.5 3-ways. Then it should sound lovely. found the stock stereo and rear paper speakers appaling
