Yep, the 2000, 2300, 8v and 16v ,  and the V6 24v Cosworth all  use the  A4LDE.

Other Scorpio variants use  the A4LDe  Box.

( Could  it  be any  more confusing ?,  the difference  being  a  lower case e  rather than  an upper  case  E, how  many wrongly  ordered  gearboxes have there been ? )

George,
IMV you need to restrict yourself to the correct gearbox.

The A4LDe on the 12V will definitely not work - it is not fully electronic - the PCM will not be able to control it properly and the multiplug is completely different.

Of the A4LDE there are differences in the Reverse/Direct Drive and the Forward clutches. The 24V has 6 friction and 6 steel plates in both the R/DD clutch and the F clutch.

The 2.3 has 5 friction and 5 Steel plates on both the R/DD and the F clutch

The 2.0 has 4 friction and 4 steel plates on the R/DD clutch and 5 on the F clutch.

IMHO you will end up with overheated oil if you subject the clutches meant for a max of 124bhp to the 147bhp of the bigger 2.3 engine, IUTY but the correct gearbox would be more reliable in the long term.

The other issue is the programming in the EECV powertrain control module.  It is set up for the performance of the heavier clutches and the greater torque of the 2.3 and it controls every aspect of the autobox in operation - the main line pressure, the torque converter lockup, the timing of the changes through operating the change solenoids etc. Who knows what effect putting a different gearbox will have on the operation? It may be perfectly okay - but I wouldn't put my money on it.   Undecided

The way I was told there are three box variants..
the 2.0, the 2.3 and the 2.9. and although they will probably all bolt up the advice is to stick to the right one.

The clutch plates get beefed up as you move up the engine sizes and in my mind that means if you put a 2.0 in a 2.3 for example you are just waiting for a world of hurt to come your way.

Just the way I see it and how it was explained by my gearbox expert, he has over 25 years experience in doing nothing but autoboxes and says he has recon'd hundreds of this type of box.

George

ps. of course I would imagine going down the range ie a 2.3 box in a 2.0 would only give you a much stronger box although whether that would be a bigger strain on other parts may be an issue.
