Spark Plugs?

No laughing please,  but  any salient tips on spark plug replacement  on the 2000cc 16v  ? ( typically ) It doesn't look as simple as on other cars, extra cabling and  multi-plugs , extra units  to remove and  deep recessed  plug holes

Is  there nowt straightforward on this d**ned  car?

And why are the plugs  so expensive  £35-40  in Halfords  to-day,  any cheaper alternate ones?

Thats dear i pay 24.99 inc vat for ngk platinum tipped plugs Shocked quite an easy job when the cover is removed just unbolt the coil packs and you are at them Grin
Dont be tempted to put non platinum tipped in to save on cost not a good idea . try a local motor factors they will be cheaper than halfords Grin

I'm sure it's only the 24V Cosworth Engine that actually States platinum tipped plugs.

Standard plugs for yours would be about £3 each, Platinum (which I'd recommend spending extra on) are about £5-6 each.

At least you only need 4

hi there

no, all 16 valve and 24 valve engines use platinum plugs as standard. that said, you can use twin electode copper plugs. i think it's eddie that uses them.

Scorpio man, I am about to change my plugs when I change the oil next week. I looked up the ref you quoted but the 2.0ltr 16v is not shown. Can you offer any advice. I am happy to replace with Platinum as you indicate just need to be sure they are the correct ones. Thanks. Simmo

hi there

http://www.sparkplugs.co.uk list your engine.
NGK PFR6B for the 2.0 16v. i'm running the ford platinum ones at the moment (20-25k miles), but will be changing to NGK BKR6EIX-11 Iridium centre electrodes. should be good with my gas conversion.

one thing i should have pointed out was ( so i've heard), that platinum plugs can go 'off' very quickly. once they are done, there're done. this can happen in a short period of driving, then you get the mis-firing etc. as i said, this is what i've been told.

hth
ps. the platinum plugs is to reduce interference.

hi bill

long story! Wink i did and then i put them back in again. as i said earlier, i thought the plugs had gone off (15k miles), so i changed them for copper ones. when it started to become more of a pain, i changed back to platinum as a 2nd last chance. in the end, the problem was the gas regulator. sorted now and the car in running great.

 Arggh!

While attempting to remove  the spark plugs  I've  ruined the head of one of those " Star" or "Torx"  bolts that  secure  the  spark plug  lead/holder. It was very tight and  failed to  turn thus stripping the bolthead.

Oh well , out with the saw and  I'll  try and  cut a groove in the screwhead  to enable  a  ordinary  flat blade  screwdriver  extrication.

By the way,  the coloured electric  wiring  outer  plastic  covering  tends to go brittle due to heat  in the unventilated  area under the  spark  plug  cover.

if the screwdriver slot does not work, don't forget that there are those screw and bolt extractors things that you can buy.
They work by driving in the oposite way to trightening.
so as you turn them to the right they are infact un-screwing.
trouble is i don't know if you can get them that fine and small for what you want.

Cutting a slot  in the head of the torx  didn't work , the metal was  too soft and just deformed. However, a sharp  smack with a hammer and screwdriver  in the  anti-clockwise direction  was enough to  enable its successful removal.
