Emergency Battery Starter

If anyone's interested Lidls are selling one of those battery pack things which will jump start your car in an emergency. It also has a built in compressor, voltmeter, light and will power portable tvs etc. Might be a useful thing to stick in the boot. Knowing me it'll sit there for 6 months till I actually need it and then it'll be flat.
Seems good value at only £19.99.

The Lidl's offer started today. The first one I went to (Thamesmead) had sold out but the next (Welling store near Bexleyheath) still had half a dozen this evening).

But I been telling people about these for months now. but £19.99 is a very good price. I seen then around for £29.99.
But as to the compressor. you have to wait and wait and wait for them to increase your pressure.
I carry those little ones on Ebay you can get for about £7 and plug in into the rear lighter socket, I found you get much more power.
But yes they do start you engine if you have a flat battery and they can power your phone if you phone battery is flat.

I really should get my hands on one of these , as push starting  an auto  is  fairly  pointless.

How do these things work then ?

It's basically a 12v battery with a set of jump leads. If you get one you should read the instructions before using though.  The Lidl's one tells you to connect as usual - red lead to pos terminal and black lead to earth on the engine. Then turn ignition on and wait 2 mins before starting. It specifically tells you NOT to try and start the engine as soon as you've connected up.

now come on them, i mean are you sure, i mean really sure, i mean sure for certain, absolutely sure. no shadow of a doubt. that the battery inside in 12v, I understood that they where 7V.
Tomorrow, I will look at the boxes to see what it says on mine.
The people selling these on ebay sometimes say what volts the batteries are.
But no wonder Nodge needs to have one of these in the boot of his car, flashing his lights all the time, they fair dazzle me all the time i trying to read or type on this site..

Cables look fairly short on that one. I think they are on some.

Mine are long enough to be able to stand the unit on the ground and still connect up to the battery.

Handy really, cos otherwise you'll be balancing the unit on top of the engine.

Some do have short cables and require you to be able to place the unit ontop of the battery for them to reach. Not to bad on a Scorpio as it sits nicely on the grill under the wipers with the bonnet open.

As for keeping in the boot and then finding it flat, try this tip I use. Run a 12v feed into the boot and connect to the units cigar lighter power cord. Best to use an ignition live to avoid overcharging and not to drain your battery while charging your battery!

Usualy, these units won't have the power to jump a completely flat car but are a very usefull failsafe nevertheless.

hey Paul B; what make are yours, because i got the top quality ones and my leads our all short.
I did not know that they made these with long leads.
The photo of the cheaper one with the one lighter socket on the side, it says 12V.
But they all say that, all the different ones on ebay say that. mine say that. because they are for 12v systems.
But in the booklets that come with mine, it clearly states that the battery inside is 7 volt.
I guessing now, but  is it,  because of the size that has to fit inside.
Before anyone starts.. I not knocking the cheap ones, I got one of those that I keep in my garage as a spare.
If anyone wants to know which I have in the cars. if you are on Ebay. at any time and see those taller ones with three lighter sockets on the front, that;s what I got.
But I think they are NO better than the cheaper ones, all seem to use the same componets

I left the car phone switched on a year ago, all over a bank holiday weekend.

John... I'll double check later what make it is (have to get it back from a mate who borrowed it a couple of days ago) but I think its a Clarke one. They come from Machine Mart shops.

Just had a look at their website. I'm certain this is the one I've got...
Jump Starter Pack

And this one's got the compressor on it too...

if anyone wants to see which ones i have, go to ebay.
put in 7956525760.

These where about two years ago £89.99. (No I was not that daft to pay this).
But on Ebay at this time they are selling at £28.95 buy it now. plus £7.50 P & P (but without insurance) o God I just mentioned that word again, now I will be for it.

But at this price they are a steal, the better quality ones. they have three lighter sockets.

As I said John, mine's the same as the one in the first picture.

The red cable you see there is wrapped around the handle a couple of times. And the black one is curled up a bit too.

With the unit stood down on the ground, the cables will reach the battery.

And I just had another look at the catalogue - they quote the cables as 1180mm long.
