AUTOBOX OIL

Hi all,

I have been reading articles about auto transmission oil condition and the changing of it, and the filter on the site.
I have a '98 2.3L (120K miles) and having dipped it, found it to be very light brown in colour but having no specific odour (i.e. burnt).
Can anyone advise whether it is worth changing the oil considering that it is light brown and not red, but does not smell burnt. There are currently no problems with the box.

Hello Peter,

IMO, change it, and the filter!! I personaly believe it should be changed EVERY 50,000 or so, it can't last forever, no other oil does!!

Go to an auto box place and have the full flush and filter done Wink

Just been looking after posting last reply.
C&J Autos listed in Basildon deals with autoboxes by the looks, I'll give them a ring.

Can't get hold of these people at the moment, but tried another local auto transmission specialist at Southend who quoted me £90 + vat for the job.
Popping down there tomorrow for his opinion before I give them the job. He did seem to know his stuff and was enthusiastic and very helpful. Smiley Seemed like we were chatting on the phone for ages, and that's a good sign IMO. We'll see!! and if I can recommend him or not.

Went down to see the chap I spoke to and having dipped the oil said it was the orignal type oil in there which was why it wasn't the red I expected to see and said it obviously hasn't been changed since new.
We took it for a drive and all seems fine considering it had done 120K. We discussed ny minor body vibration at around 50mph and from what I told him and what he felt, we came to the conclusion that it was not the dreaded cattlegrid problem, which he also knew about.
Anyway, it's booked in for next week for the job and I've asked him to keep the filter for me.
What if anything did you have in mind for me to do with the filter?

Let me know how you get on Biggles.
I'm in Basildon and it would be good to know of a reputable auto specialist down here.

I'll tell him to keep the filter then, as he said I'll be amazed at what the sump will look like when he drops it and  that he'll show me what muck etc. lies in the bottom after that time.
He did seem very forthcoming with information and explanations. Smiley

Hi all,

Had the oil and filter changed today and got the old filter back as proof (told him I didn't want the old oil though Cheesy ). Total cost £99.
Don't notice any difference anywhere, but then the box was quite sweet anyway for 120k. Although this is the only job they've done for me, I would use them again for any future work, be it a large or small job (depending on there prices of course). They are http://www.newoodtransmissions.co.uk   if anyone is interested.
