Upgrade lap belt to 3-point?

Hi all, My Scorp currently has a lap belt in the middle at the back. I've noticed that some (I quess the newer ones) have a proper 3-point belt in the middle. Has anyone changed the lap belt for a 3-point? How easy is it to do? Also does anyone have a pic of what it looks like, installed?? Cheers

hi... i am in the process of replacing the rear seat back in my ultima to the facelift one (with the 3 headrests),but have decided to keep the lap belt, apparently the work can be done, but it is something i was not prepared to undertake (it needs a bit of cutting and welding)......

Hi Nitram. I have the centre 3 point belt. If I get time tomorrow morning, I'll take a few pics of where the reel is attached and that kind of thing. Strangely enough, the 3 point centre belt was one of the the things which helped me decide to get the facelift model. Couldn't find a facelift model with side airbags here in Ireland though. ANyone know where the side airbags are? I'm presuming the side of the front armchairs!

Graham, Are you sure you don't have side airbags? Check in the corner of the windscreen in front of the driver. The panel that shows the VIN number also contains a little airbag symbol and the number of airbags on the car. 1x (very early model) 2x (early models with optional passenger airbag or 4x facelift models built from Nov 1997. I would be very suprised if you didn't have them on the facelift car. We got the safety extras in place of door lights and vanity mirrors that light up!! Baz

I just checked and there are defo only 2 airbags. Maybe it was something to with Irish spec. We get feck all in our cars over here, in most cases! Where would they be fitted? In the side of the seats? In my last car, a Xantia, they were down at the bottom of the seats, to the side of course, under a plastic cover. If they were to deploy, they would form a curtain from the floor up to your right (if you are driving & the car is RHD)

The side airbags are built into the sides of the seats. The seat is stitched with a special thread at these points which, when the airbag deploys, easily ruptures to allow the bag to inflate. I wouldn't have thought that Fords would go to the trouble of altering the spec for Ireland though seems a bit excessive!! Baz

Thanks for the info. Hmmm... Welding, eh? Think I may have to leave it as is! I would still be interested to see the mounting points etc. if you get the chance. Cheers Martin

Well as luck would have it, I've taken a couple of pics for you but my Dad appears to have taken the USB lead for pc again. But you can rest assured, it does look like a big job. I'll get the pics up whenever I get the lead.

From Baz: "I wouldn't have thought that Fords would go to the trouble of altering the spec for Ireland though seems a bit excessive!!" You'd be surprised of the changes made to spec for cars over this side of the water! And we pay more and get less I do have to admit though, that it would seem strange for Ford to change their production run just for the dozen or so facelift Scorpio's in the Republic. Although having said that, my car was wired up for memory settings for the seat but didn't have the module. I bought one from one of the guys here and I just stuck into the existing door pocket in the door - Wasn't forking out €80 just for the a new door pocket for the module. It seems there were probably no modules or door pockets in the Ford spare parts bin the day my car was built. Maybe there was a shortage of side airbagged seats too

OK - Here are a couple of pics of the 3-point seat belt set up: Shows where the seat belt retracts to on the parcel shelf. Shows where the reel is stored within the metal sheeting of the parcel shelf. Looks like a pretty big job to do, if at all practical?
