Since adjusting my steering by deft and patient tweaking of the tracking it is now behaving perfectly , trouble is , the steering wheel is now a tad off centre , I know this has been mentioned before on these boards before but how does one remove and replace it safely.

firstly disconnect the battery and leave for 20 minutes, then undo the 4 torx screws on the rear of the airbag, unplug and remove the airbag, then remove the large (17mm i think) nut that holds the wheel on,re-fitting is the exact opposite, when placing and tightening up the torx scres for the airbag, dont overdo them though(shouldn't have to unplug the cruise control wires, but if you do just remeber which ones go where).. i think that pretty much sums it up.....

much simpler and less dangerous to track it level again .. most places have a steering wheel support which does that job whilst tracking.. or if you are tracking it yourself then however many threads you adjust on one side ... then compensate the same amount of threads on the other ... regards .....STN

As it is a replacement rack I'm not sticking rigidly to the "equal threads showing on both sides " rule, more the " adjust it till it goes in a straight line and doesn't pull to one side when you take your hands off the wheel " dictum.

sorry .. I didn't mean that and no problem having unequal threads .. I meant that now you have it where you feel its ok then to get your wheel back central just screw whichever side in or out ...and the other side out or in .. hmm .. i'm sure you know what i mean STN

i had this problem AFTER tracking, pain in the backside isn't it....but removing the steering wheel was not necessary,on here somewhere is the info to adjust with the track rods, turning them both one way or the other slightly alters the steering wheel accordingly whilst keeping the tracking correct,i'm sure someone (snoopy, baz)will post the link...gaz

Thanks Craig , a very helpful link, I think I'll not bother with steering wheel removal ( disconnection of battery sounds like trouble ) , I'll just adjust one side or t'other till a compromise is reached. My trouble is that rust on the nearside track rod thread is making further inboard movement of the nut impossible. I've tried dowsing it with WD 40, gripping the track rod with molegrips but the nut won't budge on the threads. Any Ideas?

It can be long slow process gettting the nut to move on the rusted threads, Give a good dose of Wd stuff and then wire brush it. The as you state grip with mole grips and use a good spanner and do it as though you were cutting a thread wind it on wind off and take it a bit at a time.... Use plenty of WD or similar. You will not need very much thread to centralise the wheel one turn should do it, otherwise it might be better to get the steering wheel off and get it nearly correct to start with, as the instructions on the site state.
