Trolley Jacks/Axle Stands

Are the 2 Tonne Trolley Jacks and Axle stands sufficient to do work on the Scorpio or would it be wiser to go for a 2.5 Tonne Trolley jack and the 3 Tonne axle stands?
Anyone recommend a manufacturer of Wheel Ramps that would do the job as well?

Any feedback would be great.

hi there

i'm not keen on ramps...too risky for me. i use a 2 tonne trolley jack and stands. just below their limits, although i'm only doing brakes and wheel cleans etc. nothing major. if you're doing bigger jobs, then big is best. bigger jack = bigger lift, which can't be bad.

hth

oh, word of warning. the scorpio sits VERY low. make sure the jack can fit under it! Grin

Yep - spot on Scorpio-man.

I have a 3 tonne jack that is excellent, but I have to lift up the front slightly with a smaller jack first before I can get the 3-tonner under the front crossmember.

The kerb weight of the Scorpio is between 1456 and 1781 Kgs, so if you are lifting only one axle at the time a 1 tonne jack should be fine, though a 2-tonne would probably be better.

I have two sets of axle stands - a small 1-tonne set for just brake work and general maintenance.  I have a monster 3-tonne set for taking the whole car off the ground to get underneath - if you want to get underneath then the higher the better  Wink

I have set of car ramps used on earlier cars, but I have found that the front valance on the Scorpio is so low that it hits the ramps before the wheels, so I gave up.

I use a two ton jack and two ton stands, I also use some heavy duty ramps but I have to drive up on 4" x 2" timbers to clear the valance. If you are buying a new jack it may be better to get one with a fairly high lift as there is a huge amount of suspension droop before the whhels are clear.

Scorpioman/ Eric

Thanks very much for the replies. I will give the ramps a miss and probably go for a 2 Tonne jack at least, ideally it seems like a 2.5/3 tonne jack and the 3 tonne stands are the go.
Would you get enough clearance with the jack supplied to fit the trolley jack under?

hi there

are we talking about the car's jack? if yes, then it's fine just to lift it up a bit (if needed), but as you properly know, DON'T do any work on the car with only that holding it up! Wink

If  you only want to remove  a rear wheel  just pop the trolley jack  under the  trailing  arm  and  you only need to  lift  it   a couple of inches to  remove it rather than  having  to raise  the whole car body using the  approved  body  jacking points. Kiss

I have a set of ramps I made years ago which work fine... If any one want the dimensions and pictures then let me know!

As regards jacks I use a profesional garage jack and three ton axle stands for working on the car.

Thanks for suggestions.
Snoopy, I'd be very interested in your dimensions and photos of your ramps. Do you have any problem with the front valance when driving up on them?
