here we go........car had no battery light on dash when i turned it on,started car pressed trip button found out alternator not charging,£100.00 later recon alternator fitted,now got battery light and its charging ok....locked car up and the alarm works.   go to car 2 days later and cars is unlocked....funny.... put key in and cars dead as a dodo. take battery off and charge it over night,i take it to the local battery man he tests it .....its dead mate is the answer he gives me.....£40.00 later new battery [doing well so far] put it on car it works loverly.switched of car looking around under bonnet as you do and after about ten mins i heard a click [strange?] go inside the car to find it had switched it self on[the keys is in the off position] now the question is why should the car switch it self on plus if i set the alarm after ten mins it goes off,and now the fob is working,. it didnt work before. any suggestions

Sounds like the dreaded Gremlins in the fuse box.
 
The first question is " has it got a battery cover fitted" if not I would go for the fuse box by yhe battery that has got wet soemtime and is now shorting across the relays etc....
 
If it has got a battery cover then try another reset.. Take battery off and leave disconected for 10/15 mins and then reconnect.  
The electric in the Scorpio do have some strange behaviour, sometimes.
 
If not post back others will have some more ideas

thanks snoopy,yes it has the cover but the cars stood for awhile so i dont know if its been fitted on car,when i bought it the guy said the battery would go flat and that it needed a new alternator,but now it has shown that the car switches it self on i believe you may be spot on with fuse box has got wet......oh hum. maybe the guy didnt know that the car switched its self on and drained the battery.
so will have to look at fuse box now.

hi guys been busy last few days and today it raining in norwich so cant look at fuse box,   just wondering if there are any other areas of the  electrics i should look at,anyone had to change wiring harnes etc or parts of it ,

I KNOW THE 24V IS PRONE TO LOOM DAMAGE UNDER THE BONNET,BUT THE "COSSIE" OWNERS WILL NO DOUBT EXPLAIN ALL

easy check, if drainholes are open, on lief and whater gathers...
 
If moist, use a heardryer and maby compressed air to cleanup and dryout...

hi chaps,update,nice and sunny here in norwich so got to grip with electrics,last night  ripped out fuse box next to batt spent two hours pulling it apart cleaned it  put back together [piece of cake] not to wet inside between plates,fitted it to car today and guess what no difference.
dash lights not on checked fuses and fuse 16 blown put new one in ,lights come on and car starts but and theres always a 'but' now i have no headlights and when i turn the switch off the bl**dy wipers go [3 wipes]  
any suggestions i am pulling my hair out [and i havent got alot]

All the fuse boxes on the scorpio have been kown to cause problems for SOME people not all.
 
Others will no doubt have soem ideas as well.

thanks snoopy,this scorpio is doing my head in.if fuses 16/17 control electronics,then if one of them blows the dash lights fail and car wont start,do you know which one does what as i have now had another look at the car and the red pats light on dash is not flashing now and the fob doesnt work it wont lock/unlock,car still starts.
 
front side/headlights dont work and indicators also,hazards work plus when you move indicator lever it buzzs as the car has towbar fitted,the rear lights all work and i have changed the light switch.  
scorpio the car you love but boy can you hate them

re blowing fuses. sometime using the front ashtray can blow fuses. there's a lot of metal parts around the back of it. maybe a wire is touching Undecided

hi snoopy,just taken the main fusebox out of car guess what its been to bits before,sillicone round the bottom, so i have now taken the 11 plates apart only to find that some pr*tt has used sellotape to hold the copper parts in place on every plate..........whats the insulation value of sellotape......not good i would have thought,
so i think i might get have to get another fusebox.

hi martin, would ford use sellotape over the copper strips i think not,the plates have grooves in them to keep the copper strips apart so by sticking sellotape over several strips at once must cause them to 'short' surely.

hi guys,rebuilt main fusebox fitted it to car,all ok.connected battery and i can hear a low hum coming from somewhere down by the steering under the bonnet,after disconnecting the following,abs/cc/lights and a couple of other things can still hear humming,unclipped wiring harnes on chassis ........the harnes that runs under the servo and into the dash........is warm. strip off covering and found most of the wires are cracked and wet.....so its shorting out causing abs/tc problems i have.
the vin plate states that the car is june 96 so should have updated wiring if the website info is correct but it seems this one has the old wire in it.
next question does any one know if the wiring harnes is the same for all models as i have look at 2.3 on r reg and the harnes looks the same in  both cars and as the 2.3 will be broken the guy said i could take out what i wanted as they dont want the wiring.

update.....just fixed electrics everythings working at last.....has anyone removed the harnes that goes though the vee of the engine as mine has a couple of cracked wires so i need to check it out,is it much of a job

harness in the V is a bit nasty to remove, quite a strip down, yes Ford do secure the buss bars into the fuse boxes with sticky backed plastic. (oooo valerie singleton)

got it out ,yes bit of a job,what a poxy job ford made of these cars,i have owned several grannies but the wiring on this cossie is total c##p,how can ford do this[you see old ford cortinas/capri/ zephrys that are 40 years old with good wiring]was talking to guy in scrap yard other day he told me that 2 people had scrapped they scorpios because of bad wiring.just hope the repairs hold.
