Handbrake cable adjust

Stupid question time...... Tomorrow (hopefully rain free?) I shall be changing the rear passenger side brake caliper. As the discs and pads will be changed at the same time I'm going to adjust the handbrake cable. I had a quick look under the car today with a crisp printout of http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/brake/HandbrakeCableAdj.pdfand found the adjuster locknut as stated in the above link. Firstly...how do I remove the locking pin? I tried pulling it and it didn't move, so then I tried unscrewing it and managed half a turn but it didn't "undo". (I didn't have any tools at the time) Secondly.......this will be a dumb question but I have to ask- I noticed that there is only one adjuster for the handbrake which leads to the passenger side rear-how do I adjust the drivers side handbrake cable? Thanks all, Wayne

Cheers Scorpio man, Just to clarify: Quote:i'd just add, before adjusting the handbrake back on, pull the level on and off 20 times to equalize the cable. |
| Do you mean before re-connecting the handbrake to both calipers, follow what STN says (ie: pump the brake pedal to seat the pads properly) and then pull the handbrake lever on and off 20 times, then reconnect to calipers then jobs done? It sounds far too easy! I must admit tho, after fitting the discs and pads, before finding my leaky caliper, for some reason after I'd finished and lowered the car back down I pulled the handbrake on before touching the pedal. The lever went pretty much horizontal and the pads didn't even touch the discs. I then took the car for a test drive hoping that the brake pedal would seat the pads-which it never, which is when I found the leak. Hopefully I get it right today and get the car back on the road. Thanks again mate.

Oh I see. Thanks Scorpio man. After de adjusting the cable, exactly how do I remove the end from the caliper? There just doesn't seem to be enough length in order to slip it off the lever I spent a few hours trying earlier, and after bending and pulling the cable end and pushing back the lever etc I just couldn't get it off! There must be some technique? Much more of this and i'll end up needing a new cable as well

Ooops-just noticed a smally error on my post #2: Quote:The lever went pretty much horizontal and the pads didn't even touch the discs. |
| It should read: The lever went pretty much vertical and the pads didn't even touch the discs. It felt pretty abnormal, and before I tinkered, the handbrake was fully on within about 6 clicks. Now it just seems to go on forever! !
