Alternator??

I wonder if anyone can give a bit of advice on this one...
Car has developed what I would describe as a rumbling noise which I have tracked down to occuring whenever there is heavy load on the alternator, e.g. after engine start, or switching on front/rear screen heaters.
After a while when alternator load decreases, so does the noise.
Engine starts fine, battery doesn't seem to be losing charge. The alternator charge light has the occasional dreaded dim glow common to many scorps, but its done that for ages, long before this noise appeared.
I am thinking that either the alternator bearings are worn and therefore require a replacement alternator or maybe the belt tensioner bearings?
Anyone else had anything similar?
