Hi Gaz...

Parkers says the manual Ghia TDI estate does 34 MPG average.. pretty good!
125bhp, 0-60 in 10.8 seconds, 293Nm of torque (12 more than the cosworth), top speed 120mph. Insurance group 15.

Sounds good.. see what honest john says about the diesels. There are legends in my town of diesel Granadas covering over 700,000 miles though.. so they can't be bad.

Honest John says to make sure the 75 amp alternator on a diesel has been replaced with a 120amp, as the 75 is not up to the job, and is very costly to change. Also: 'On 2.5TD replace PCM and two vacuum switches which cause engine to overfuel, sooting and damaging the MAF.'!

I do like my 2.5Tdi, but it's the old one and definitely is suffering from the overfuelling problem at the moment as my MPG has dropped from 34(ish) to 28(ish)! Ouch. Looks like something to get sorted.

It's on 170,000 at the moment, which isn't a great deal for these engines.

My daily drive is an N reg Ultima saloon td with 206,000 miles on the clock, same colour as on the one on ebay. Full service history it still runs sweet, loads of low down torque means easy sideways driving if you so wish in the wet  Smiley averaging out a typical week of 240 motorway miles and 70 miles in town i get 45mpg easily, dropping down to 35 when i'm heavy footed. Worst i've ever got is 10-15ish mpg and that was when i was rallying with my foot to the floor for 1 1/2 hrs.

Engine wise i've heard of pushrods popping out but this hasn't happened to me, the only thing i've had to replace so far is the alternator at a cost of £90 for a new one from my FMD, fitted by myself which took about an hour. My other 'project' scorp (on 170k miles) on the other hand suffered from when the conrod in no.1 cylinder  disconnected itself from the crank, rearranging the piston and cylinder bore in the process Sad this i think was simply an unlucky case as it was a recon engine and might have had bad servicing . hopefully (weather depending) this weekend i'll be taking that engine out and putting an engine from a 1997 car i bought in. only its the newer 125bhp engine and there's some extra connecter's so it should be fun.

So... well worth getting i would say if you do a lot of miles or just want a cheaper to run scorp, just so long as its been serviced properly it shouldn't be a problem at all. This engine is also in the old rangerover and Jeep Cherokee, so if ford doesn't have the bits you can always try them.
