Has any one out there changed there transmision from auto to manual? Its something I have been thinking about as my auto box is getting a bit worn and it leaks some oil from the front seal. What would be envolve? I was thinking :Change box, flywheel, the brg in the end of the crank, prop shaft, pedels and gear shift suround. ElectricsHuh? this could be the problem for me?

My car is a 1996 2.9 12v auto.

Any advice greatfully recieved!

Sounds  like   a   "  ' hole   messa   trouble   man" ,   seriously,   would it not be wiser to search for a  replacement  autobox?     a lot of the Scorpio's  magic  is the  smoothness  of  the  acceleration ,    why go back to a  vulgar and notchy  manual  gearbox? Grin

 Think again young man.

Mickey,
I've researched this for a couple of guys who wanted to put 24V engines into kit cars.  With the 12V it's a bit easier because it uses the older EECIV PCM rather than the more complex EECV.

Basically, you remove the autobox, torque converter and drive plate, then the spigot bush from the crank.  You leave the electronic Transmission Range Selector in P (or short out 2 pins in the multiplug, I can tell you which ones) and tape it up out of the way.

You need to source a Ford gearbox (MT75 from a 2.3 16V would be perfect) and this will bolt on. Use the clutch and flywheel from an older Granada, plus the spigot bush if it will fit, if not get one machined from bronze - that's not v expensive.  Then obtain the clutch slave and master from a manual Scorpio, plus the pedal box. The places for these are blanked off - you remove the panels. Obtain the internal trim for the manual and bolt it all together.

The Ford propshaft will not fit, so you measure between the end of the gearbox to the differential flange, take the prop to a specialist and they will build the correct ends to fit (deducting a small length to allow for diff movement). For the best results try to keep the centre bearing in the same place.

Bobs your uncle.  A lot of the parts can be sourced from scrappers now, and needn't cost much.  Leaving the TRS in 'P' fools the EECIV into thinking the auto is in Park so it doesn't run diagnostics and detect the missing autobox!

Mickey because your car is the V6 12V auto it is the most simple V6 to convert.
A MT75 2wd would be a good choice but you will have to find a 2wd MT75 that mates upto a V6. They are sometimes hard to find, another choice would be a Capri type 9 but they are a bit weak & might not last too long.
If I was you I would stick a auto back in as you can do it in a day, a manual might take you weeks.
Also I think it would cost you more to fit a manual.
With floppy on this.

Goodluck

Thanks Guys, all suggestions taken on board Wink Its good to know that it can be done. The Scorp is not my main car so time off the road would not be a big problem. The other good thing about changing to manual for me it that I could tow my caravan without being worried about cooking the box all the time( yes we have a Gnome Home! ) Thanks again Mickey.

Sorry to steal this thread, but.. Was the 24V ever sold with a manual?

I would love to get my hands on a 24V sometime, but I dislike autoboxes. I basicly love dropping it into third and flooring it when I need to pass the car in front  Grin

But the Scorpio's auto box is great for this.
Flick the O/D button and floor it. Then off you go!

Personally, I think that once you get  the hang of it, its a fantastic box. Wouldn't bother with a manual myself.
