Has anyone bought a VSS new from Ford recently? if so how much are they. Have recently (3 weeks ago) fitted a known working second hand one which cured the non 4th gear and cruz control probs I had originally. But today I think the problems are returning. Now its not selecting 4th until you get to 45mph even on gentle acceleration and sometimes then only occasionally. It also now comes out of 4th even if you are at a constant 30. On one occasion today it was going backwards and forwards from 3rd to 4th. On all occasions CC wouldn't engage either, which set me thinking it was the VSS at fault again. On the last outing today the cruise did engage but still comes out of 4th at 30mph. I'm sure it didnt do this before. I didnt want to spend a load of money on a new VSS if there are other things it could be. I have checked the fluid level and colour and all seems ok there. Its a 94 12V . Any help would be gratefully recieved. Unfortunately I dont posses a fault code reader would one of these be a wise investment?

The 12v does not have a MAF 4th gear should engage at 47 mph on the 12v and the gear box should drop out of gear and "coast" below that. does sound as though your gear box is behaving normally to me . may be it wasn't before! The cruise control could just be dirty contacts or the cable has broken... the unit is behind the drivers side headlamp.

I did check for the MAF as per link before I posted and couldn't find one, that explains that one! I think I may have had a bang on the head as it's doing exactly as you describe Snoopy, I just didn't recall it changing into the 4th as high as that. As for the cruz, been out this morning and its fuctioning normally today. So I guess there may be some dirty contacts somewhere. Will check that one out. Cheers for the advice guys.
