24V engine & auto box removal

Hello All
Will be doing Cam chain / guides / etc renewal this summer.
Rather than carry out work with engine insitu - has anyone removed engine & box unit instead.
Big question is how difficult is it to remove engine & box as 1 unit.
Thought that if doing cam chain stuff may as well check over other things - wiring loom between V and along to box connectors / oil pump / renew all vaccuum hoses etc and anything else that the more knowledgable members suggest.
Like a lot of my ideas good in theory - but what are the practicalities.
Just to clarify - I don't have a mechanics workshop - hence no pit etc.
My idea of engine removal is bonnet off and block & tackle engine unit up & out. Disconnectiing things first!!
Fingers crossed that not too difficult - but better to know now in early stages.
Looked around site but coouldn't find anything on engine removal.
Anybody know of something I've missed.
david.

Morning David,
I have been removing and rebuilding cars and engines for a long time, and have built up a comprenshive tool kit and a wide range of equipment, and I am afraid I sound like a Haynes Manual, if that be the case I do apoligse.
You need a good set of sockets, to include at least two extension bars, (to reach manifold to down pipes)if you remove the cat on drivers side, acess to EGR is easier, try and keep the  ERG intact when you remove engine,if you have got to remove it from intake manifold, mark it for reassembly. While on the subject of the ERG valve, obtain two 10mm nuts 25mm long to fit valve to down pipe, it is a lot easier to adjust when everthing is assembled.
In "what you need", a good set of ramps is essential and a high lift jack. If want to leave the car on ramps you need a hoist with plenty of head room to clear the grill.
I think it very important you read the workshop manual, if this is your first attempt to remove an engine, you could not have chosen a more complex subject, buy yourself a bottle of tippex and a note book mark all connections and take plenty of notes and don,t put a completion time that is impossible to achieve.
I do intend to put togeather a blow for blow account in simple words, and list useful tools and DIY jigs.In the mean time if you have any quiries I shall do my best to answer.
Regards
Fred

David
Correction to my message concerning ERG valve nuts, should read 6mm nuts x25mm long, the 10mm refers to socket size.
Sorry
