Ford 7000 Missing Display Possible Cure

Dear All, Like many Scorpio owners with the Ford 7000 car stereo my display faded then came back then went dim etc, etc, finally just went completely, This has been bugging me for ages but I think I have found a cure. Mine has been missing once again all winter (it comes back in the summer) so it looks like a humidity problem. I have a feeling that the more you use the stereo i.e. if you do long distances the unit gets warm and so keeps "dry" inside, this is great but if, like me you do short trips the poor thing never gets warm. My answer --- get a hairdryer, open the cassette flap and warm the stereo up for about 5 minutes also take off the front security panel and warm this, DONT EXPECT AN IMMEDIATE SHOW OF THE LCD it takes some time to return, every time though I have done this it returns my screen for ages, (this is extreamly useful if you have disconnected the battery and otherwise have to guess the code you are entering). Please let me know if it works on yours. (go careful with the hairdryer though dont hold it to close to the Radio, its better to be a bit further back and a longer time than to close and to hot. Good Luck. STEVE

Interesting, other posters have reported similar successes with using directional heat to restore faded display. I do believe however that the 7000 unit itself when on produces a fair amount of internal heat ( judging by the warm cassettes when removed from the player ) due to the powerful transistor packs fitted so one wonders if it's just an age thing. My unit at 10 years old gives no trouble and it's on ALL the time !

Nice. I just did a hell of a lot of driving and it sorted itself a month or so after buying. Although, I do know it will go again. Will try that one in the future. Cheers!

Re my earlier post, Mr_floppy is correct --- I am sure that if you use your car for long journeys the radio stays dry (possibly even if the radio is off) with it on like he says the unit gets hot and so the display stays on, My car is only used for short trips so this is why it keeps fading. Steve

In the mists of time when my beast was in a the car hospital,I took my radio out and left it in the airing cupboard with the dry washing, seeing as 'er indoors has a minimum temp of c.3000 degrees centigrade set on the immersion I thought that would do the trick, but alas nope, smelt nicely of Lenor but the display was still as blank as a Mcdonalds servery teenager!
