Exhaust - What does this do?

Just wondering but what do these 2 exhaust boxes circled in the picture do as i'm thinking of making my 24v a bit more 'vocal'. My thoughts are that they're either an expansion box, a silencer, or both? Would it matter if i were to cut them out and replace them with some straight through pipe?

Thanks, Matt

Have a look at this Matt:

http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/manual/exhaust/exhaust24V.pdf

think they are some sort of mufflers.

Hope your Cossie is going well  Grin

Hi Dave, yes its all going well so far thanks  Grin though i'm gonna have to re-check the autobox fluid after reading up on it here about the colour as i think it may be a bit suspect... but i hope not  Smiley The manual conversion maybe sooner than planned!

Yes those are the ones i'm talking about (borrowed my picture from ebay), also found this tasty looking item from the forum which did away with the mufflers in question:

Ahh yes Barries car, that is an real beauty, he's really done some nice stuff to it.

About your autobox, if it changes gear ok and takes up D  and R in reasonable time and without a bang it would be well worth changing the gearbox oil. My fluid looked a bit ropey when we got the car home (sort of dark but not burnt) but after a gearbox oil and filter change it has been great, immediately transformed it  Smiley

Looks smart even in that 1 picture, not seen many in that colour though. The autobox takes roughly 3/4 of a second to engage which i think sounds about right (i'm an autobox newbie), and the oil resembles what you just described. Had a bit of a 'smell' to it which i'm not sure whether its good or bad, though there wern't any 'bits' in it.

Yeah it should have a mineral kind of smell to it so yours sounds ok. 3/4 of a second is pretty good, doesn't sound like you have got anything to worry about. An oil and filter change for it will keep it in good health though.

  Removing  the  silencer  boxes  may:

1.  Affect  performance  ( Ford tend to fit these things for a reason )

2.  Affect  emission  levels,   and fail the MOT.

3.  Affect  noise levels,   and  fail the MOT.

those two boxes are just silencers, you get a very satisfying roar by removing the tail pipe box & welding in a streight pipe.
prescence or not of silencers or cats is not part of the MOT, only an emission test, but it wont pass that with out the cats.

Thanks Martin, was gonna leave the cats and the very last silencer where they are and just remove those 2 centre box's, but i thought i should probably ask before i get too hacksaw happy and then find out they do something important.

Cheers, Matt

will probably effect ones fuel consumption though.

Why not buy a Ford Fiesta with a big bore exhaust?  Grin

Sorry, cant understand the Boy Racer look at the Ford Scorpio.  Its just not the right type of car for all that lowered/spoilered/booming/revving/17yr old-just-passed-my-test carry on in my opinion.

leftofcentre, thats the whole idea, there is nothing worse than a chavved up fiesta IMO, i just wanted it to sound a little bit more vocal and still look standard (hence leaving the standard backbox).

I'm 19 and people at work have big bore exhaust'd fiesta's and the like, only they've spent more on the exhaust than i did on the whole car, and they still don't have a hope in h*ll of keeping up with me even as standard!  Grin

Personal view Scorp looks handsome as standard but here are some alternatives.

Thats another thing i like about the scorp, cheap insurance  Smiley  the insurance for my td was £1200 tpft, but for some weird reason i can't explain the insurance for my cossie is just over £900. Not bad eh  Cool

Compare that to my mates 51 plate 1.6 Fiesta Zetec S he's paying £1700, and he's the same age as me!

Matt

p.s. Although not very subtle, have you seen my lighting upgrade on my td, put them on for my rally driving. Get quite a few 'looks' as i drive by:

Thanks Dave  Grin , i'm really a bit stuck as to what to do with the pair. The cossie is perfect for doing the rallying in (once i've put some wider tyres and the spots on it), i actually bought it as a cheapie to save my td which i need to get me to and from work reliably everyday, the cosworth in such good nick i really don't wonna go ruining it if anything were to go more sideways then usual and end up going all pear shaped.

I'll probably end up rallying it at the next one, but i think at least i've saved another scorp from someone else getting hold of it and disecting it for ebay.

Although no rocket, the td has done me proud and me and my navigator are currently in joint first place (we're still beginners), but this could all change (hopefully not!) as we missed out entering the last one due to one reason or another:

Will let you know how it goes!
