Brake Fluid Change

OK, I have 3 choices here... 1) Leave the old goo in there, but I'm getting new calipers and might just as well renew the fluid. 2) Detach a pipe and let it bleed all over the floor into a container. 3) Take it to a garage for a 'specialist' job. Don't have the funds to carry out step 3 so actually there's only 2 choices What do you reckon?

I like the best the 2nd option......all over the floor It will be better because brake fluid is hygroscopical, in other words it absobrs water and makes you brake calipers to rust. Once 2 years it should be completly changed Cheers

OK, just had a look at this page.... http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/brakesmanual.htm There's a section on this subject there. Yes, I suspect all is not well with the fluid as the rear calipers are shot. Handbrake mechanisms have now completely had it

h paul the design is at fault. most fords suffer with this. i went through 3 on my sierra. re the handbrake. it being an auto, the handbrake doesn't get used much, so the pivot can seize. if the cable is too tight (1 or 2 clicks), it can pull the 'cam' round too far. ie passed the piston. think i've heard you can remove the cam and clean them up, but haven't tried or even looked myself. when bleeding the brakes, follow the instructions and watch you don't get any air into the system.

Hi Paul Just had my rear calipers changed for the M.O.T and had the fluid renewed at same time, garage only charged me £50 + vat for the job. Got the calipers from www.speedways.co.uk Mind you i did get the last two they had on the shelf last Friday, but thay did say they were getting more in sometime this week. £96 each, must return old calipers within 14 days or a hefty surcharge for each caliper will go on your credit card. Andrew... you're right about autos & handbrakes. We don't use 'em do we? I've promised myself that once I've got new calipers, I will be applying the handbrake more regularly. I suppose the swivelly, cammy piston thing would come out and could therefore be cleaned. Mine aint really moving at all without the aid of a hammer I will look into that when I get the old ones off. Dave... mine are coming out at a very similar price, but he didn't mention an exchange As I say, I was hoping to do an investigative strip once I got them off. Maybe not if they have to go back. paul i think its good to use handbrake all the time to keep it in working order like you say those little parts all tend to seize then we have problems to get them working again m8

OK... I popped back in to PartCo in Ashford yesterday to check the prices and whether or not these were exchange items. Apparently, I do have to take the old ones back and have to pay a 30quid surcharge on each caliper first. Get that back when I take the old ones in. After getting price confirmation on these and the discs & pads, I came away thinking it really wasn't a cheap option. £376 in total So, when I got home, I contacted Trevor at FordPartsUK.com For the same stuff (but proper Ford gear) and not having to exchange calipers, it will 'only' cost me £305. That includes a fiver for the postman too. OK, it still aint a cheap job, and its another 300 notes I really dont have, but surprising that its cheaper than the cheap stuff.

| That's a good'un mate - tell me another! No, I'm not quite that lucky. In fact, if I fell in a bucket of tits, I'd come out sucking my thumb! I was thinking of 2nd hand, but convinced myself that with the brakes new would be best. Mind you, you couldn't get much worse than whats on there now I'm giving the whole thing some thought. Hopefully, in the mean time, my Lotto numbers will come up!

Hi Paul, Did you find out if rear calipers from a 16v estate are the same as 24v saloon? As i said i have some in my shed and if they are the same would only be too happy to strip them down and make sure they are tip top for you if you wanted to take that route regards Paul

hi there that might be a good idea. i think the 24v and all estates are vented at the rear, only the front being diifferent through out the engine range.

| No, I didn't find that out, but I will investigate. When I went to PartCo, I told them the exact model & year, only to be asked, "Ah, but are they vented or solid?" "Vented of course" I said. "Surely all 24valvers are" "Not according to this" he replied. "And do the pads have wear indicators? If so, are the connector plugs round or square?" All seemed a bit vague to me and I daren't ask about estates as well!

All the estates have rear ventilated discs, the same as the 24v cossie saloon/estate, only the 12v saloon had solid rear discs. Check this link out: www.speedways.co.uk Rear calipers for ventilated discs only £96 per caliper, no surcharge up front, but if old calipers are not returned within 14 days your credit card is hit with about £36 per caliper surcharge. I only done mine last week for the M.O.T. HTH Fitzy

Hmm... I'd rather go new with these, but my pocket says no I'm afraid It would appear that these calipers are the same on the estates so Paul, I'll have a look at yours if you don't mind. Also... they were indeed used on the Escort Cosworth as well as the first Sierra Cosworth followed by the Sapphire one. Not only that, but the diseasel version too. I imagine that they are the same on the Granadas too, but I forgot to check that out.

Sorry to drag the old brakes up again, but I'm finally going to do something with them tomorrow (Sunday). I have a question... How much fluid does the system hold? Will a 1litre bottle do, or do I need the next size up which is a gallon ?

I Would recomend you only buy small bottles of Brake fluid I think three will do . as once it is opened it goes "off" by that I mean its hydroscopic and attracts water and as such lowers the boiling point of the fluid which can cause problems.... I change my fluid once a year ..... . but that personal prefernce Ford recomend every 2 years.... Or as Paul states 3 sorry if I mislead you but after all its better to be safe than sorry IMHO . I never keep brake fluid opened always get rid of it with the waste oil.

Surely it is not beyond the wit of man to invent a brake hydraulic fluid that is NOT hydroscopic thus doing away with the need for a messy and fiddly procedure. A "sealed for life" system that would get my approval.
