Slight squeal on cold start
« on: Mar 22nd, 2006, 12:57am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Hi All,
about 50% of time when I cold start I hear a squeal from the engine bay that last 1-2 secs. Never occurs when restarting during day (hot or cold).
The air con/blowers are always turned off when I start.
The belts were (allegedly) replaced about 20k ago by FMD and I've checked them and they look fine.
Cars done 60k

Any ideas?

(just been reading Baw_Flingers experience with the belt tensioner http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=Advice;action=di splay;num=1142857296. - got me worried  Shocked )

Thanks

Paul

Depending on the model, if a 2 or a 2.3  it could either  be the  water pump, alternator, CC compressor, PAS pump or the  tensioner pulley  itself  that is  causing the belt to squeal   ( or maybe it's  the belt  , they do wear out ).

The tensioner pulley is easy to remove,   just one bolt  holding it.

In my case it started with the odd sqeel now and again till it just became a constant underlying noise. Get the belt off and give the wheels a spin, you'll need a long handled wrench with a lot of elbow grease as the tensioner has a lot of torque in it. Best to use a wrench that pivots as the air box gets in the way. The tensioner wheel should spin freely with no grind or stick if it is good.

Good luck.

Hmm... I had no squeals or anything with mine, but I did discover that my tensioner was cracked!

Well, I've had a look. Here's the piccy of the AC belt:

Quite badly cracked - and its only supposed to have done 22k  Sad Is it normal for a belt to go so quickly? Or have I been a victim of "worked charged but not done"?  Angry

The tensioner seemed to move quite freely but I must admit I was reluctant to release it from its "on hold" position:

The 15mm spanner is holding it (the tension that is) against the fan housing.
Is it safe to release it and if so how (and do you have to do anytrhing to "retension" it)?

Seems I'll be replacing the belts soon (not relying on FMD !!!) so I'd appreciate any extra advice

Cheers All,

Paul

Hi Paul,

Its safe to release it. It has a built in stop. Nothing to do to retension, just crank it back with the spanner as you replace the belt.

How much?!   Shocked

I paid £10.86 for the main fan belt through FPUK and £6.68 for the AirCon belt.

24v Main Fan Belt - 7310607
AirCon Belt - 7082866

By the way, my belt looked just as bad, if not worse, than yours Paul

Hi Guys,
called the local FMD - they want £9 for AC belt and £15 for main belt but neither in stock - I'm about to order from FPUK.

I really don't think they were changed 22k ago but don't know how to prove it  Angry  Do they stamp lot numbers on these things?

I also have a tiny leak on a coolant hose where it leaves the engine block and returns to expansion tank (green gunge around joint). I read on the Ford "Cooling system description" sheets that the coolant can cause deterioration of belts  Huh Was going to do these this year anyway but will be changing these now as well.

The Scorps going to get a lot of TLC again this year but its worth it  Kiss
