Replacing switch assembly on MT75 gearbox

Notes:
Bought one from a scrapyard off the Granada with same gearbox.  Took mine out and found they are completely different (though same mountings).  However, the older one works fine but you'll need to adapt the Scorpio wiring to fit as they use different plugs.

Scorpio uses a light brown coloured assembly with a moulded connector containing 2 or 4 flat pins.  The RH two pins are for the reverse switch, the LH two (if fitted) are for neutral switch.  Inside it has a long curved metal tongue.

Granada/Sierra uses a black assembly with a short fly-lead and a round multiplug on the end with circular pins.  Black and black/blue are the wires for the reversing switch.  There is no tongue inside, just a pointed central pin.

Method:
Jack up the LH side of the vehicle and support with axle stands.  Chock the front RH wheel and apply handbrake.  Put some newspaper, cardboard or otherwise under the gearbox to protect the floor from any oil drips.  There shouldn't be any due to raising the LH side of the car but just in case...

Unplug the wide connector from the existing switch and also pull of the wiring clip from the square protusion on the side of the gearbox.

Switch assembly can be replaced without removing or lowering the gearbox but access is extremely limited.  You'll be doing this job mainly by feel but a lamp underneath could help.  I couldn't get a ratchet into the space, but could use a short hex-drive torx bit and a 10mm spanner on it.  Once the bolts have been slackened off they can be unscrewed easily by hand.

Remove switch assembly.  If replacing with the same type then this can be refitted now.  If replacing with the older type then cut off the multiplug and crimp some spade or bullet terminals on before fitting the switch.  You'll also need to cut off the existing connector on the loom and crimp on the respective mating connectors.

Testing (with switch assembly off gearbox):
The newer assmebly has an angled block in the top RH corner as you look into it from the gearbox side with the tongue at the bottom.  Hold this in whilst checking for continuity between the two RH terminals in the moulded connector.  If there are two terminals on the LH side then check for continuity between these whilst pushing in the central pin in the switch.

The older switch has no visible moving parts apart from the central pin.  Look carefully around this central pin and you will see the gear positions indicated.  Again, the reverse switch is in the top RH corner - use a finger or ball-point pen to squeeze the rubber in the top RH corner to the right, towards the metal outer shield.  You should feel it click as you do so and should get continuity between black and black/blue wires.
