Trip computer accuracy

I put £20 in my scorpio (in an empty tank) and the trip computer (reset) was telling me I had 70miles in the tank.

HAving done 40 miles it just beeped and told me I have 50 miles left in the tank.

Are these trip computers known to be pessimistic?  I hope the answer is yes.

they change as you are driving, im sure they use the previous ten miles results to predict what you have left

90 miles for 20 quid sounds about right, 20 ish to the gallon, depends on the engine and most of all how you drive it  Grin

my last car was a megane convirtable that averaged 40 MPG

20 MPG makes me feel a bit queesy.  I will have to give up eating or something.

What engine is it?
Short runs, heavy right foot will kill the MPG
I can get 30-35 on motorway runs at 60mph with a 24v but average 25 over all journeys
A lot of short runs and its down in the teens though  Grin

I have a 12v 2.9

My drive to work involves driving out of my road, on to the A45 for 4 miles then on to an industrial estate for 1/2 a mile.

I guess that would be a strange mix of short run and motorway driving.

With those kind of mileages the engine will have barely warmed up (it could be doing half the journey 'on choke') so that would explain low mpg, even if some fast roads involved.

Hopefully you should see a marked improvement when you go on a long run of 20+ miles.  If about 5m each way is all you'll be doing then you may want to consider fitting a pre-heating system (such as the Kenlowe hotstart if they still make it) which will have the engine all up to temperature ready for when you leave.
