another A.C. question

Sorry to be a pest with Climate control problems, but I’m going to any way!
On tick over, with AC on it keeps trying to stall! The electro clutch kicks in & out causing the revs to die drastically. I have had the engine cut out on me whilst on a journey before now so I rarely run it now.
My question is should the AC clutch engage gradually or is it operating correctly by operating instantly? Does it constantly engage/disengage whilst in operation? Would a simple re-gas cure my ills or does it seem more involved? As my next step, at my peril, is call in an Air Con. specialist
By the way it does pump out cold air to start with then seems to struggle to keep up the performance.

I also seem to remember a modification to increase the chill factor as well as people having problems with the blower fan cutting out! A link to these would be much appreciated.

I look forward to the correspondence to this.

hi there

i'd clean out the idle control valve first (along with the MAF), then look to get a regas. the system can lose up to 20% per year. the gas also get a special oil add to stop the compressor siezing.

A bit more information: -
On tick over & A.C. (on Auto - Low) the A.C. pump kicks in & out but when I increase the revs it stays engaged! Is this the correct operation?

hi there

how do you mean? what sort of revs/time?

the system should cycle on and off all the time.

only time it 'cuts out' is when it's on WOT (full throttle). what speed are the engine fans running at? fast or slow?

I noticed it when the engine was warmed up following a journey; I returned home and was putting the car in the garage! Whilst I was unlocking the garage the engine would nearly stall then regain normal tick over revs (about 750 to 1000) on about a 5 second cycle. I popped the bonnet to see what was happening and noticed when I pick the revs up ‘by pulling on the accelerator cable’ to about 1500revs plus the AC clutch would stay engaged! Obviously with the increased engine revs it would not stall! I’m not sure if the cooling fans were running at full speed or not but didn’t realise that that would make a difference to the A.C.? I hpe that all this makes sense?
I look forward to any thoughts on this matter & will give more information as requested or as I find it.
Thanks in advance

hi there

sounds like the compressor is dragging a bit. a regas with new gas and oil might fix it. Smiley

the fans running in high speed mode if there is a pressure problem with the system.

Thanks for your advice. I’ll look through the link tomorrow and see what I can come up with, but it looks like I’ll have to contact my local mobile A.C. specialist, maybe next week, and see what he says? Hopefully I will not have to re-mortgage to pay his bill!!

The IACV also may be worth a check / cleaning.

hi there

it's the valve for the idle. it's on the throttle body with 1 electrical connection and 2 bolts.

clean with carb cleaner and oil the 'ram and seal' with a bit of engine oil.

Thanks for the info. I'm not at work for the next 2 days so I'll try Octavian's remidy first and take it from there, maybe even replace the IACV unit. If that doesn't improve things I'll get it re-gassed. I'll get back to you with the outcome.

Regas is also verry important, because in the porcess oil is entered in the system so it reduces friction in the compressor, prelonging it's live and avoids siezing

As a tip with the IACV, mine when it was blocked i have cleaned it several times, and oil is verry important. Mine didn't give in easy....it was "verry stucked"....took me a few tries to make it go well.

Agree with Octavian. The oil seems to be essential after the cleaning and I also found that although the gasket looked ok it needed a new one and once fitted all was well.

Had a look at the IACV and cleaned/lubricated, all was free and moving as expected, this made absolutely no difference to the problem so I have called a local mobile AC specialist he will be round Friday afternoon.
I’ve had the car about 6 years and never had the AC serviced so it can’t do any harm, and I’ll see what he has to say. He quoted me £65 for Service/Gas & Oil

Had the AC checked out and was informed that it was operating within parameters, Obviously he did advise a service but scared me when he showed me that the filter (some times known as the accumulator) had never been changed (Still had 1995 on it) and recommended a replacement along with service total of £160. He didn’t charge for the pressure check / advice and confirmed that the IACV could be causing my problem so it back to that for a check/replacement. I have a few things on my plate at the moment so this problem will have to wait for a while
