Spare key or remote

Hi All

I am the proud new owner of a R reg Ghia 2.3 saloon.  I only got one black key with it.  Ford garage has quoted £20 for black key, £20 for red key, £40 for remote and £80 to program these (plus vat on all): that seems steep!  Where's the cheapest place to get a spare key (and a remote - does anyone know if this car should/can have a remote - guy bought it from said no but Ford wanted to sell me two!)?  thanks!

Don't know about the cost of keys but £40 for a remote is a very good price - you can program it yourself (instruction on the main site) but make sure it is the Scorpio one not the Granada!

Thanks Dave - I saw the article on programming the remote - can this be done with a black key or is the red one required?

The type of key matters not a jot as you are only turning the ignition switch to the required position to program the remote. If it is a 98 car Ford only supplied 1 black key, £40 is a good price for the remote.

AFAIK the facelifts had the later PATS II security system that does not have a red key.  However I think you need two coded black keys to code a third without a programming unit

FMDs can code a second key as can some mobile auto key cutters.

I had my extra keys cut and coded by a man in a van - a lot cheaper than my local FMD but it didn't go easily for him, he had to wipe all the keys and recode them all.

Why stop at 2 get what you can afford and sell them on Ebay check out what they are going for on there first.

Where is this Generous Ford Dealer?
Would be worth a trip to fill up a box with remotes!!!

I've forgotten which as I was ringing round Ford dealers in London and Bradford to find out where cheapest/different options but was late on a day so few still around.  **Think** was Polar Ford Bradford though.  If you are in the market for it, worth an hour ringing the line at work I think Wink
