Can anyone tell me the coorect way to check the automatic transmission fluid please? I assume that its a matter of warming the car up and checking when its in park on level ground but just wanted to be sure.

Run it to normal temperature, find a level piece of ground, remove and wipe clean the autobox dipstick, put the handbrake on and apply the footbrake, then quickly move the selector lever its full travel from P to 1 a few times, put it in Park, then insert the dipstick and check the level.

Hi gents keep hearing about checking the level and colour/condition of auto fluid, what colour should it be? What colour is a warning sign? Sorry if its a silly question never had an auto before.

I'm still having the issue with the dipstick showing only 1/2 level when you first pull it out (engine running/hot/cycle thro gears) but then showing overfull if you then put it back in and pull it out again. I suspect that the dipstick leaves some fluid inside the tube as you pull it out the first time and it then gets wiped back onto the dipstick end when you pull it out again. The tube goes through a couple of sharp bends so it must rub on the sides. I've got a vacuum oil drain pump on order which I'll put in at the max level and see if it pulls any out. I was under the bonnet this pm and checked the level with the engine stopped for 1/2 hr after a 5 mile run and the first level showed only1/2 again and the second over max. With the engine stopped the level should be higher then running but it wasn't really up to the 65 degC. I'll let you know the results of the vacuum pipe test.
