Window tinting
« on: Aug 23rd, 2006, 6:24pm »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

Hello,

I was looking into tinting the rear windows on my saloon (with film) and got a few questions.

1. from the looks of it, the easiest way to cover the door windows are to take the glass out and add the film without the window in the door? Any comments?

2. How do I remove the "cushions" on the sides of the rear seat? It would make it a lot easier to get access to the quarter glass. Or do anyone have an easier way to do it?

3. How do I remove the high-mounted brake light? (and preferably the parcel shelf cover).

Any comments are appreciated.

Cheers,

OK, dont remove the glass, no need & its harder to do,remove door cards then remove rubber trim along bottom of glass(inside behind door card) remove trim around quarter glass 1 or 2 screws in bottom pull off (be gentle) pull brake light cover along shelf to back seat to remove, unbolt rear speakers from inside boot & remove p shelf cover.....! the next bit takes as long as it takes dont rush it & if its your 1st go plan on wasting as much film as you use !!!!        Clean all glass inside & out then clean it again use a foam backed green scouring pad ,drop glass 3 inches spray soapy water on out side lay up the film & cut to lenghth (film has to be correct way round with backing away from glass) trim top along glass then trim sides now peel down backing half way soaping as you go open door soap inside, place film on inside get cut top level slip in sides, work out water at top  then use a flat needle file at about 20degs. to glass to remove edge so rubber dont peel it back. shut window pull down rest of backing work sides in & work out air & water (dont use window for 3 days) now you know why its a £300 job !!!!!!!!!!!!!    if your still awake & want to do it i will tell you how to do a curved rear window when i return from holls.   I did my silver 2.3 all round & it looks the muts n*ts !!!!!!!!!!!!

1, yes, take the window out  of the door, it will look much better/proffesional

2, to remove the "cushions" sounds difficult, but is really easy, you needa large spanner to remove locking pins that the seat back lock into, follow the edge of the cushion, and prise out metal tabs from there holders? unbolt seatbelt at base, on top of cushion remove two small scews in plastic cover, then you can feed seatbelt through.... and hey presto!
unfortunatly i cannot remember if the rear seat needs to be removed or not?, but you will see  Cheesy

before you buy the film, look at the quarter panel from inside, it will be tricky to get it looking proffesional.

3, the top of the rear brake light comes off, and access can be gained from inside, and under the parcel shelf (if i remember rightly)

tip, i reckon it will be easiest to remove all the rear seats, cushions and shelf in one go, tint all at once (check quarter panels first)
removal can all be done in less than 30 mins, same as refitting, you will need large torx bit for seat removal
(t25/30)

Ive attempted it twice the first time I left the glass in and it looked more like the dogs dinner than his nuts.
The second attempt I removed the glass and fitted the film with the glass on the bench much tidyer job but it is very easy to undo all your hard work when refitting the glass.
If or when I get the scorp done I will be paying a pro to do it.

Quarter glass is easy to do with only trim off,i never took rear seats out iether  plenty of room (im 5ft 10) but go with whats best for you .All film is laid up on outside & trimed to size first so having done glass out of a car i find it best left in, less chance of damaging film too

hi there

remember that the front doors need to let 75% sunlight through. and they're already tinted.

i went for 20% tint at the back and rear doors and 15% on the front doors. not had any trouble with them. Wink

He was trying to get some but then he was thinking of selling it so he didn't bother. He is now keeping it so he may be on the lookout for some again.
