wife took the 2.3 out last night and it developed a miss - just had a look this morning and there is deffo no spark to no 1, (even checked the lead for continuity and nothing) but am I right in thinking that plugs 2 & 4 are actually under the coil packs ?? - sorry if this seems like a dumb question but I've never really looked before ??

Yes they are, Just remove the two Torx bolts per coil and they lift off, Be carefull with the coil loom as this tends to be very brittle and looses it's sheathing, Replaced mine with new wire and soldered this to the old plugs. Sounds like it could be the lead though.

This picture will help.http://www.fordscorpio.co.uk/images/top%203.jpg. You will see that the coil pack on four is linked to number one. Just be careful undoing the electrical connectors as the wiring goes very brittle due to the heat. I have just had to renew mine.
