2.3 engine number location

Hi, Newbie question this, and I know it sounds a bit stupid but can anyone tell me where to find the engine number on a 2.3 block? On the 2.0 8v DOHC's in the Sierras and Granada's it's on the flat on the very front of the block, just below the head gasket but on the 2.3 there's not the space for it there and there are just two letters stamped there - "Y5" I think. I've looked all round and I'm missing something obviously - must be going blind! I can get to all areas of the block as it's currently sat on an engine stand with head and balancers removed so any info as to it's location would be appreciated. Thanks Jim

As far as I can remember it is in the exact location you mention, If the block is dirty or rusty then it is hard to see it as it is made up from small dots, Give it a once over with a wire brush

Thanks fella's - will have a closer look later though before I painted the block with engine lacquer I did take to it with a drill mounted wire brush and it didn't reveal anything like an engine number.... As this block is going in a Sierra (then ultimately a kit car), I need to keep the V5 updated - which is going to be very difficult unless I can find a number.... Oh well, will keep looking! Anyone got a letterpunch set in the meantime?
