What is this?

Found this when I replaced a burst coolant pipe:

One of the wires going into it is loose and the other is cracked.

The temp gauge is working normally, so it can't be the temp sensor for that, and iirc the fans should come on at full blast if it was the other temp sensor?

The picture isn't that clear but if the units are side by side then I'm pretty sure it is the temperature sensor for the engine management system. The temp guage sensor only has one wire to it iirc, whereas the 'other one' has two.

You're probably right. Should probably keep an eye on the temp gauge then?

I think you'll find that the temperature guage is fed directly from its own sensor. The other one, provides the engine coolant tremperature, and feeds that info to the EECV. If it is not connected properly it is likely to cause problems of fuel consumption or starting as the system presumably doesn't know if the engine is warm or cold. This may help explain its role. Scroll down the page.

I knew the part with the temp gauge having it's own sensor (re my first post  Wink) But if the fans (amongst other things) are controlled by this one, then it might be that they won't come on when needed. (just guessing here)

It's  the  temp  gauge   sender,    the one   with   the  push -on    rubber  cap  fixed   on   to   a  threaded   post.

If that's the one your talking about ,rubber cap and a threaded post then it is the temperature guage sender as Mr Floppy says.

The temp sender only requires one wire,  so I don't know  what the other one is for  Sad

Sorry 'bout that but the macro function on a mobile isn't perfect, to say the least  Wink

As far as I can see, it's the only push fit connector directly between the throttle body and alternator.

Looks like the temp guage sender to me as well.

Have you tried pulling off the plug & seeing if the temp gauge still works? Smiley
