hi guys i have a 96 diesel ultima car wont switch off on key all ignition lights go on and off at the right time was told it was stop solenoid bought a second hand one fitted it but no different any ideas thanks

Well, this makes a change from the usual 'it won't start' syndrome Wink
 
Electrical fault most probably, check for sticking/melted relays and whether there's any damage (water etc) to the fusebox.

haha, some of the buses i drive do that, engineers cant be bothered to fix em, only way to stop em is put the pedal to the metal, they rev a bit then die....

I've seen elsewhere that it's possible for diesels to carry on running on oil passing the piston rings or valve stems.
 
The fuel shut off can be working fine but the engine still runs - sound like this may be what's happening with your buses as opening the throttle would weaken the fixed amount of blow-by.  If the fuel shut off is not working the engine would rev up OK.

could be John, it only happens on a certain model of bus, normally V reg, so they are old, but i think its the fuel shut off or similar, its as if they use whats left in the fuel line from the pump, rev a bit, start to die, rev a bit more, then die, they start ok afterwards though....
