Hi, does the 2.9 12v have the same auto gearbox and starter motor as fitted to the 24v's?
Cheers,
Guy.

nope the 12v and diesel are different, the 2.0 2.3 and 24v are similar but have different numbers of brake bands

The boxs may well swap over ? but there are upgrades to the inside & the angle of incidence of torque converter blades all changed because of the higher output of the 24v, how the eecv would see the change i dont know?as far as i know the starters are the same though

Hi,

There seems to be a misconception that these boxes have a different number of brake bands.  They do not, they all have 3!  One for low/ reverse, one for 2nd, and one for 4th OD !!  They all operate on the same geartrain layout.
It is the number of friction plates stacked up in the clutch drums (more for higher torque), the planetary gearsets (stronger), and some of the bronze thrust washers are replaced with torrington races (stronger) also the rear sprag is beefed up on some models.  It is for this reason that they are not interchangeable.

That is the differences between 24v and 12 v and 4 cyl, as well as the bellhousing and torque converters, and of course the 12 valve has an old style semi electronic control / valve block.  The ecu's dont compare input and output rpm to the point where they will flag a ratio error and I beleive the ratio's are all the same anyway.

Regards Dave

Dave, can I do this? Will the 12v flex plate fit on the 24v? I assume from what you're saying it will, just want to be certain before spending any cash.
Cheers Guy.

The autobox them selves are not the same but yes the flexi plate or flywheel what ever you want to call it is the same fitted to all cologne V6 automatics.

The bellhousings are the same what the starter bolts too & the blocks dimensions are also the same.

So any starter motor/flexi-plate combo from a V6 cologne based engine will be interchangable.

So a 12V one is O.K Wink

I should add this it only relates to A4 auto's.

Thanks for that Wink Can get my hands on the 12v flexi plate and starter for £35. How much do you reckon to get them fitted at a garage £25 an hour ish? Haven't got the facilities/experience to attempt this myself.

Hi Guy,

I would book it at 4 hours Transmission in and out mate, depending of course on how easy the exhaust comes apart.  Any hassle with seized bolts / Nuts / Broken Studs would get billed additionally.

regards Dave
