Thermostat on a V6

I suspect my Thermostat may be stuck open.

Or it may be the temp guage.  Is there any way I can confirm if it is the thermostats before I take the water pump ect. apart?

I did not realise what a job it was until I looked in the Haynes manual.

The Haynes manual??

You have a 12v?

Sender will be easiest to try first

The Granada Haynes manual covers the 12v V6.

If the gauge and wiring is OK, shorting the rubber sender directly to ground should cause the gauge to show hot.

Feel the top hose as the engine warms up from cold, as the thermostat opens at its set temperature, the hose should suddenly become warmer with the flow.

A short bit of wire with one end pushed into the sender's rubber plug and the other end onto a good ground on the engine, but both connections need to be good.

I trapped a thin wire in the plug by pushing it back onto the sender, then clamped the other end under a small bolt on the engine. The gauge is heavily damped, so expect it to take a few seconds to move to hot.

With the gauge working properly and had you time to give it your full attention whilst driving, as the engine warms up - you should see the gauge rise to around midway, then quite suddenly drop back a bit as the thermostat opens then start to rise again a little as the water in the radiator becomes warm.

The guage is stuck on the blue, surely even a stuck open stat would move the needle further.
