Smells and I'm in love!

First let me point out this is my first auto. I saw mention of checking the colour of the auto box's oil and smelling it. Mine has no unusual smells, just smells well -oily. Colour is the colour I would expect of lightly used engine oil really. Would that be about right?

I'm now in love with this Scorp after my first 13 days with it. I absolutely hate buying cars and perhaps even more so the grief of selling them. I am not a careful buyer at all, I just buy them based on a quick glance and that which is obvious to be seen. This despite being fairly handy with motors, being more or less brought up in garage and being able to fix most anything that needs fixing.

Once bought I often get that sinking feeling, wondering if I have been sold a pup. I have only once bought a second hand motor, well a motorbike actually and felt everything was right with it before I had even seen it. That was something about the owners obvious and genuine love his machine. The bike was in better than new showroom condition and I had made my mind up in 10 seconds glance at it from 10 yds away that the sale could not have been more genuine.

I've had a few Granada's and each came with a few small problems, but never has any of them cost me much to actually repair up, or keep in repair - no major bills apart from fuel and the cost of the parts to service them. All have been in fairly exceptional condition when bought and all well looked after. Unlike so many of the smaller cars, some burning oil and pretty well worn by the time the get to 60 or 80k and needing serious money spent on them to make them reliable.

The Scorp initially had me quite worried. After my first decent run with it, it absolutely stank around the engine of burnt oil, the sort of smell you get when an engine is well and truly clapped out. A few good runs and the smell has gone completely, so what was causing it is anyones guess. It's service and MOT records suggest it has not done many miles per year in recent years and it is only 1,000 miles from its last major service during last winter.

I buy them, then spend weeks going through them end to end getting things right, inspecting, checking, lubricating until I feel I know them well enough to know I can trust them to not let me down.

As I've driven it and bit by bit worked on it to get everything right, I've seen just how good its condition is - so now at last I'm starting to feel quite chuffed with its purchase.

So chuffed in fact that rarely an evening goes by without me thinking up some excuse for nipping in the garage to just take another sneaky admiring look at it - is that sad, or what?

This one is coming together quite nicely!

I sometimes get an oily smell too, but the only thing I can see causing it is the breather that goes to the air filter box?

Yeah. Just flushed out my engine yesterday. 15 minutes with the flushing oil on a nice gentle tickover, 20 minutes cooldown, and drain, then a nice new filter, a nice new sump plug gasket, and a fill of lovely clean green Duckhams, which I swear by.

Full check and all ready for winter.  Grin
